HP 1040 Plain Paper Inkjet Fax - Page 5 Questions & Answers
When we send or print
You will need to clean your scanner glass. This scanner is used when you make a copy or send out faxes. It will not affect your incoming faxes. Just lift up the operation panel where your originals are fed in for copying/faxing out and look for a 1 inch wide strip of glass running from one side of the machine to the other. Clean this glass using a soft cloth and a little glass cleaner. Apply the glass cleaner to the cloth. Do not spray the glass with cleaner. Clean this glass well and then make a copy to insure all streaks are gone. If not you can use the copy with the streaks to guage about where the streaks are on the glass with where they are on the copy. This can sometimes help in finding subborn dirt that my be stuck to the glass. 100% sure this is your issue.
Good Luck
My hp 1040 will not start up or turn on. I
If this is the model with the plugpack built into the back (and your cord plugs into this removable bit) just ensure this is firmly home with a good push!
failing that it looks like you've done all you can as a user, your local office equipment repairperson could be consulted, it's most likely a power supply replacement.
Good Luck!

it may possible that you have a DSL conn. for internet & phone line.

Why is it when I am sending a long distance fax to
There are several reasons this could be happening.
- Does your office allow for long distance dialing and if it does, do you need to "Dial 9" or some code before dialing long distance?
- Have you dialed "1" before the area code?
- Is the area code correct?
These are the most common reasons why you would get a long distance error while faxing. Hope you find this useful.
Have changed phone service providers. they say
If they changed you over to Vonage or some other digital service, the fax machine will not work reliably.
You need a plain old telephone system POTS for your fax. All faxes are analog.

Im having a problem sending faxes long distance
Hello,
The first thing you do is to try to fax it manually until you hear a buzzing high and low tone then press the green button(start). See how long it takes to hear that fax signal and time it.
So when you recorded that time you can set the fax machine in it fax settings to about 36 seconds. when you send a fax it will only send your signal after 36 seconds.
See if that helps
My hp 1040 constantly jams have tried to clean it
>first try to power reset the fax machine, then see if the error still persist..to to a power reset unplug power cord from the back and wall outlet then wait 30 sec and then plug it back
>if the error still persist open the the rear access door and check the if there is any jammed paper in there.using a lint free cloth lightly moistened with distilled water wipe the rollers clean. also check if there is a paper jam from the inside of the printer by opening the cartridge access door
>If there is no paper jam and it gives you a paper jam error message then try to check if the carriage can move freely, first while the printer is on open the cartridge access door of printer cover, the carriage will move to the center which will give you access on it, now unplug power cord from the back of printer with out pressing the power button off. try to check if there is any debris or paper that is blocking the carriage path. with your fingers try also to move the carriage from left to right and see if it can move freely. if the carriage can not move then you have a carriage jam which causes also the paper to jam, if it can move freely then try printing and see if it will jam again.
>also try to remove and reseat the ink cartridge.
>if this will not resolve the issue try a hardware reset, while the fax is on unplug the power cord from the back with out turning it off. press and hold # and 6 at the same time.while holding the buttons plug back the power cord and wait till you see semi-full or nvn reset when it turns back on then release the buttons. if the machine will not automatically power back on press the power button. it should ask for you to select language, region etc a proof that you have successfully done the reset..try printing...
>if it jams again contact hp and ask for replacement if it is still in warranty if its not ask for an upgrade
