Dell Harddisk problem...solved...

I dropped my Dell DJ 20g Mp3 player today at work, and it would not reboot out of "rescue" mode. I tried to performe all of the options on the rescue page and recieved the "harddisk error" response everytime. So... i took the back off, removed the battery pack, pulled out the hard drive and examined it. seeing nothing visibly wrong i replaced the hard drive and pluged the batt pack back in, still able to view the HD. when i turned the unit on i could hear it start to scan then suddenly stop and then start to skip, a kind of clicking sound (i could also hear this sound while the unit was still intact) With the battery pack plugged in, i lifted the HD up (still connedted) and gave it a few thumps with my screwdriver. i looked back at the screen and it was playing a song ;] I have no idea why the unit started to work again, just dumb luck, nor do i think this will work all the time (let alone again for anyone), but i thought i would share my story and maybe help someone who has lost all hope. So if you get as pissed off as i did, take it apart and beat the crap out of it ;] you might save some money.

Try to see if you can upgrade the firmware...mine did this so i upgraded to the latest firmware from Dells website. It actually had the upgrade already- but it formatted the drive & fixed the problem. Luckily i keep a file backup on my pc so i didnt lose anything with the format. It worked for me, so it might be worth a try for ya; if it doesnt- well ... i found several 20 gb DJ2s on line for like 50 bucks. would problably cost you more than that to fix the one that you have- just a thought

Dell Digital Jukebox and microsoft vista

I think my trusty DELL DJ (now coming up on five years old!!) will sadly be replaced as my main mp3 player sometime this year... I love it, but no drivers!!! Perhaps I can find a way to use it as an external/portable hard/flash drive.

Dell DJ (Generation 2) not being recognized by computer

Found the answer on Dell Forums. A lot of Dell DJ folks have been having the same issues. The problem is with Windows Media Player (shock). The Windows driver dated 2006 is installing itself and taking over, not allowing Dell's 2005 driver to work. The bottom line is the DJ will dock but not be recognized by your computer, Windows Media Player, or Yahoo Music Jukebox.

To check to see if this is the issue dock your DJ then click on start, right click on my computer, and then hit properties. Click on hardware tab and go to device manager. Look for portable devices on the list. You will likely see your DJ with a yellow (!) next to it. Right click on the DJ and hit properties again, then look in the driver tab to see what driver is listed. If you see a driver with the date 2006 or newer, then Windows is screwing you up.

The only way I've found to fix this is to either uninstall Windows Media Player or go back to an old enough version that the 2006 driver is not in the system. The 2006 driver is from Microsoft and somehow it interfers with the proper driver, which is from Dell and should be dated either 2004 or 2005. Once Windows is uninstalled completely, or back to an old enough version that you are safe (I am not sure how far back you must go, I just uninstalled the darn thing completely), you need to uninstall the Dell driver then go to Dell's website and reinstall the latest. Also make sure you have the latest firmware.

It sounds like a lot of work but it honestly took me longer to type this note that to do it and I don't have a clue what I'm doing. It's better than throwing away your DJ. From the comments I saw on the Dell Forum, Dell is not aware of the issue and isn't much help. Many people spent hours on the phone with Dell support only to hit a dead end and get the recommendation to replace the device.

Hope this helps all. A huge thank you to the folks over all Dell Forum who figured out the solution despite Dell's technical assistance.

Program to download

I think I have something for you. On the back of the player you will notice a Service Tag number. Just check out this site: http://search.dell.com/results.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=gen&cat=sup&k=jukebox&rpp=12&p=1&subcat=dyd&rf=all&nk=f&sort=K&ira=False&spf=Dell+Digital+Music+Player&~srd=False&ipsys=False&advsrch=False&~ck=bt and enter in the Service Tag number that you find into the form on this page. After doing so you will receive all the downloads necessary for your player to work.

First Gen Dell DJ 20 Gig "File Cannot Be Written" Transfer Issue

Yahoo jukebox was bought out by Rhapsody. I had the same problem and their only solution was for me to buy a Rhapsody subscription. I know this is not the solution you want to hear but that seems to be the only way to keep any music that was stored using the yahoo jukebox.

Repair Parts - Service Manual

ok, first you should know that the dj line is not very well made, dell skimped on many things. as far as tearing it appart... first pop the roller out with a screw driver (start at the bottom of the roller) then you pop the plastics off the ends there are eight screws total on the top and bottom. remove them. you then should unplug the battery, and slide it out the bottom. then you should be able to remove the mother board and hard drive from the shell. the screen, as far as i know is interchangeable with others from djs.
i am not a tech, just a kid with some nerdy noledge. i havent actually removed it for myself but it should work.
