My 2002 rca projection tv

I had a similar problem with my 42 in Philips LCD HDTV.

Here was the problem. My Power Supply Board had several bad capacitors. I opened my TV (warranty was expired of course) and found four bulged capacitors on the PSB. Many major electronics companies Philips/Magnavox, Sony, Panasonic, and others were sold capacitors that failed in 2-5 years instead of 10-20. The capacitors fail prematurely due to a lack of preservatives. Unfortunately, they were installed in all sorts of devices and cause a wide range of failure problems.

Here are some options for you.

1. Have it fixed by a professional $$$$$$$??????? (Is it under warranty?)

2. Open your TV and find PSB. (The board that the power cord plugs into) Check for faulty caps. If you find some (bulged or leaking) bad caps replace the entire board. The entire board costs around $250 right now because they are in high demand right now. They can be found at tv-part.com but supplies are limited. I would definitely shop around though.

3. Remove and then replace individual faulty caps. This takes some soldering skill.

Caps are inexpensive and if you can take care of it yourself it will save you hundreds.

This may be your problem. If you determine that it might be.

I have a Tip/How TO tutorial on this site that may also help. It gives step by step instructions for replacing caps on PSB #715t2432-2. If this is your board you are in luck. It's called: Fixing the Philips Turns/shuts off on its own problem. I'm working on uploading pictures to help guide people though the process as well. Let me know if I can do anything to help.

Hope this helps and if it does please rate it accordingly. Good luck.

52" RCA Rear Projection P52937SG Color Dots?

There could be an obstruction in the way of the three picture tubes on the inside. This tv has a chassis that comes out from the back all in a chip core frame with handles. Takes a quarter inch nut driver to remove and you should look to see if the speaker wires or the keyboard wires are obstructing the picture tubes. Other something I think of is a broken reflector and when you get the chassis out you can look up inside behind the screen to check for this and for any other obstructions.

The problem i'm haveing is with

Projection TV sets are known to have two common problems. The first problem that is common to these sets is convergence failure. When this happens the TV will usually look 3D, Wavy/Distorted, etc. It may also shutdown and blink an error code.

The second common problem with Projection TV sets is dull video, halos around objects, white looking video, or red overpowers the screen. This is commonly caused by the fluid in the lens being clouded overs.

We just bought a used

You can take the TV apart and adjust it. There should be some screws which will allow you to remove the top and then slide the plastic screen out so you can see inside. But if you don't know what you are doing, I'd suggest letting a pro do this.

Center convergence is adutable &

This is a PTK 195 chassis and it rarely has any convergence circuit problems.

THERE IS ONE COMMON VERY INEXPENSIVE THING THAT USUALLY CAUSES THIS PROBLEM IN THIS EXACT SET.

You will need
a volt/ohm meter to see if your set has this problem. If you unplug the set and remove the back cover ABOVE ALL THE MAIN CIRCUIT BOARDS on the bottom of the set you will find a small circuit board about 3 inches wide and 9 inches long.

This board provides the primary voltages for the Convergence circuit the set uses.

There are two or three plugs, and four screws that secure the board---very easy to get out but note and or mark the plugs so you get them back correctly.

On the right side of the board you will find a group of about ten diodes---all of them EXCEPT TWO are the same size.

I have seen in this set twenty times that ONE of the two large diodes in bad (shorted).

Very easy to test---a diode with an ohmmeter (set range to 20k) should only have a reading in one direction= usually in one direction you will read about 4k and when you reverse the test leads NO reading.

A shorted diode will read like a good fuse===0 reading in both directions(a short).

If you find one of the two large ones is shorted they are 3 amp 1000 PRV (Peak reverse voltage) and what are called fast or high speed switching.

If one is bad you do not have to replace both. If you do not know what they look like I can provide a photo here showing you. Each diode has a band on it noting polarity. When you replace it the new one MUST BE FACING WITH THE BAND IN THE SAME DIRECTION. You will if one is bad only have to solder two leads==one on each end of the part.

I have tried to make this answer as detailed as I can since I do not know your skill level. IF WHAT I SUSPECT IS WRONG this is one of the most easy sets ever made to repair this problem in.

Please let me know if you have questions and or need more help---I am here to help.

Picture looks like a bow

You have a convergence problem, this is very common with these type of sets. Also quite possibly too a problem with your power supply.
I do NOT recommend that you try to DIY, this particular set, these type of sets are very hard and complex to service, plus there is almost no service information for reference. Even for the convergence data.
It is my professional opinion, that you should find an authorised service center, when there, or when they call, please, first ask for a 'Quote" before allowing any repair work to proceed. This way you can get an indication of costings, and then you can decide to repair or replace, as seemingly simple faults, can quickly, once examined to know more, escalate into a very expensive repair.
However if you do wish to DIY and you are wanting to have a go and try to repair your set, well OK, I guess. But PLEASE, start in the right place, otherwise you will simply waste your time and money, You see, you MUST start, in the right place, The Power Supply, FIRST, as, if, that isn't right, nothing else can be. But you simply cannot do anything without a Service Manual. In this it has everything one needs to repair the set. OK if it is shutting down, after that amount of time, of working and then faulting, then it is most definitely a "Thermal" problem, the way we "Find" problems such as this is "Freeze Spray" you use this on each component that is suspected of being the "Culprit" and you will soon, find that errant component. Now, also not every fault is a Capacitor, I see many, many people that think, that Capacitors are always the "Culprit" and replace them, because someone else had done so and it worked, well that maybe sometimes true, but most Symptoms, can, and do have many, many different "Causes" & also, now while that may be true in a few cases, a faulty Electrolytic Cap, or even, ordinary, Cap goes faulty, this is only a SYMPTOM, something has damaged those caps causing them to "Fail". One MUST always find the root "Cause", otherwise if you just treat, the SYMPTOM, the "Cause" will just make the "Symptom" come back, in short order, as the prime cause still, hasn't been fixed., Now Capacitors hate AC ripple, or Over Voltage. Thats it. Oh.. and Heat, if these Capacitors, are too close to a Heat Source, then thats a prime cause of failure. Resistors, hardly ever go faulty, and if they do, it is generally obvious. However it doesn't hurt to check values with our Multimeter. Remember though resistors are made, with up to 20% tolerance from stated value, as such, are not too critical, unless in Timing circuits etc. Always check, the Values, of resistors, as with any other component, with the power OFF. Now Diodes especially "Zener Diode", are another thing to check, those and ordinary "Signal Diode" should always be suspect. next we have Transistors and IC's. The Transistors MUST ALL be checked to see if they have a good, "Junction" this is done, with our meter set to "Diode Test" and usually are about 0.6 to 0.7. With IC's you must check, voltage levels, or Logic Levels, going in and out, have a look at the circuit diagram, and it will tell you what they should be. It is a good idea to always measure the Power Supply voltages, see if a "Rail" is Low, that will be because some component has gone somewhat or all short circuit, to Earth, now, if the "Rail" is Higher, suspect an "Open Circuit" component, like a Diode, or Transistor. The voltages expressed in the manual are spot on, ANY variation MUST be investigated. I have been doing all this for over 30 years now, and I do indeed wish, we could have a set of "Symptoms" and be ables to say.. "Oh that;s the so-in-so and replace this" however unfortunately this although does happen, most "Symptoms" can have literally tens, of "Causes" all often "Interlinked" One simply has to do a methodical troubleshooting procedure, and always think, "are my Voltages Correct" as this is how, you Fix the problem, by making them so. Keep up the good work. If that link above doesn't furnish a Service manual, it is imperative you get one, even if you must pay for it. It will pay for itself in about 2 mins.

Big screen tv

Projection TV sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the video to look normal. When its out of alignment the video will look 3D, wavy, distorted, etc. Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the TV menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired.

This is a very common failure on these projection sets and a fairly simple DIY fix. All projeciton sets including Samsung, RCA, Sony, Philip Magnavox, Panasonic, Pioneer, Akai, GE, JVC, Toshiba, and others at some point will have the same problem.

Common Symptoms include....
  • Screen looks 3D
  • Colors don't line up
  • One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
  • Screen is bowed or warped.
  • TV shuts off after powering on. Power light will blink. TV may also make a chirping noise.
Here are some photos of convergence problems.

Here is a quick test....

Using your original remote go-to the settings menu then goto the convergence section.

Try to adjust the red and then the blue convergence.

You should be able to move RED and BLUE in all directions - up, down, left, and right. And you should be able to get the grid straight.

If you can't move them in all directions or cant move them far enough your convergence chips are bad and should be replaced. This is a common problem.

Note: If you TV has as flash focus or magic focus button only try pressing the button. If it fails to fix the convergence your need to fix it. See below for a fix

You will need to replace the convergence chips and possibly some convergence resistors and pico fuses.
This is a a fairly easy DIY job if you are handy and can follow directions. You can get complete repair kits from TvRepairKits.com or click here. They have put together DIY repair kits that include the OEM parts and step by step photo instructions for each repair. If you are not handy or can't follow directions we would suggest calling a shop.

Fuse fl231

You could possibly get a fuse at a car parts place or Radio Shack, however if you don't want to make a trip to the store I have done this several times with no problems....Take an AC cord and strip the cover back to get to the strands inside and cut out one strand of the copper wires and either wrap it around the old fuse or solder it across the fuse on the foil side. It is equal to about 5 amps. If the wire blows there is a short in the circuit and would require more assistance from me or another expert.....Dennis

I have a RCA P52937

The high pitched noise you have mentioned is definitely coming from the horizontal deflection circuit. Check the deflection circuits for any damaged capacitors on the deflection circuit. Cracked, leaky or swollen(at the top) if its electrolytic. SMD caps are more complicated. You should have a multimeter capable of measuring capacitance and equipped with a tweezer. Best thing would be just to replace all the caps on the deflection board. Should be around 15-20 of them.
