Cant get the blue convergence to move on tv, has a

Projection TV sets have two very common problems. One is convergence ( 3D/Warped video) the other is CRT fluid ( Dull Video). Here are more details and solutions for both. Repair kits with instructions are also avail from www.TvRepairKits.com

Common Problem #1) Convergence has gone out

Projection TV sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the video to look normal. When its out of alignment the video will look 3D, wavy, distorted, etc. Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the TV menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired.

This is a very common failure on these projection sets and a fairly simple DIY fix. All projection sets including Samsung, RCA, Sony, Philip Magnavox, Panasonic, Pioneer, Akai, GE, JVC, Toshiba, and others at some point will have the same problem.

Common Symptoms include....

  • Screen looks 3D
  • Colors don't line up
  • One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
  • Screen is bowed or warped.
  • TV shuts off after powering on. Power light will blink. TV may also make a chirping noise.
Here are some pics of convergence problems.

Common Problem #2) CRT Fluid is Cloudy

Projection TV tubes have a liquid coolant that is used to keep them from overheating. After many years the coolant in the blue and green tubes will become cloudy and cause the screen to look dull, red/orange, etc. You may even see halos around images.

Recently I moved my tv

There is no question in my mind that the extreme cold is the prevailing factor. Depending how long the set was in the cold determines the time needed at room temperature before you even plug it in. I have recommended up to 24 hours before the set is even used, because parts heat up rapidly when first turned on there is a greater chance of failure especially when it comes right out of the elements. From your description it sounds like one part has failed shutting the tv down and it is probably in the power supply, in my opinion it is worth getting it checked out.

Tv wont turn on. it does show the red indicate

Hello,

The issue you describe is consistent with a power supply board issue. This is the board where the AC goes to. This problem may have occurred as a result of irregular power supply, or excess power supply or power surge.

The TV is receiving current but cannot circulate or transfer the current to other necessary part of the TV because of the defective power supply board.

I do not think it needs replacement, rather some defective capacitors are causing this issue.
Open unit up and take a look at the power supply board. You will probably see one or more electrolytic filter capacitors that are bulged up in the top-not perfectly flat like the others.

The value of these capacitors will be different, most likely they will be somewhere around-820 to 2200uF/25 V( or /10V sometimes)

You can replace them with same values but I would recommend the voltage rating to be higher(like 35V for an original 25V) for reliability purposes.

What happens is,these bulged top capacitors will cause a low and unfiltered DC voltage=main board will malfunction(the relay will keep clicking until the caps are holding enough charge to bring the voltage up over a threshold point).

You can buy these capacitors at any Fry's or Radioshack store or you can order them online at vendors like "mcmelectronics.com"(look for electrolytic capacitors).
After replacing these capacitor(capacitors) most likely the normal operation will be restored.

Note: There may be also some other causes for this symptom ,like a defective T con board ,or main board, but the bulged top capacitors are the most common cause for this issue.

If you don't know about TV repairers, take the TV to the nearest repairman to fix the fault for you. Also, note that TV stores a lot of current, so wait a while before opening the TV back cover.

I hope this helps.

Good luck....

When u turn it on the red light blinks then cuts

Hi Steven,

This is an indication of out-of-regulation in the power supply section. The very common caused of this fault is the leaky electrolytic capacitor in that section. It will drop the supply from normal voltage and will disable the unit. Sometimes it has a bulged/dome at the top but not all, it is better that you have a capacitor checker/tester to determine its condition. Also, bad solder joints can produce the same symptom, it is hard to spot, you should use table lamp/portable lamp for finding the cold solder. Secondary reason of fault is the open fuse/fusible resistor in series with the output of regulator IC/transistor, shorted/openRegulator IC/transistor, shorted zener diode(all are in the power supply section) and the microcontroller. Best that you check the output voltage of each regulator to determine where the fault came from and narrow the job.

If you don't have necessary tools and test instruments, and can't do the job yourself, I would advice you to look for a professional to troubleshoot the problem. Don't attempt to work in the power supply if you don't know the safety precaution of handling it, there some stored electricity enough to hurt you with a little mistake only.

Also check if your unit is under warranty /extended warranty, avail it because the manufacturer of your unit will fix it for free. Don't open the back panel, this will void the warranty.

Hope I helped you.

Have a nice day!

Thanks for using Fixya.

TV set turns itself off after I press power button

I had a similar problem with my Phillips 42 in. LCD HD TV.

Here's the problem. The Power Supply Board. I opened my TV up(warranty was up of course) and found several bad capacitors. Phillips and several other companies were sold capacitors that although were highly rated failed within 5 years because of a lack of preservatives. All sorts of electronic equipment is now being effected due to these defective capacitors.
Solutions?
1. Take it in and have it fixed
2. Open it up, check the board for faulty capacitors(bulged or leaking) Buy a new Power supply board and install it.
3. Remove PSB, remove faulty capacitors and replace with compatible new ones.

Hope this helps

When I turn on TV

Hi,

The whining noise you are hearing is very likely caused by the color wheel motor, and not a fan. Usually a bad fan will make a fluttering, low pitched sound; but the color wheel spins much faster, so it will make a higher pitched sound when it starts to go bad.

If you wish to change this yourself, very good instructions (and a video) can be found at these two links:

http://www.jangro.com/electronics/samsung-dlp-replace-color-wheel/

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cx4pbNjsxfU&feature=related

The instructions are not necessarily exact to your model, but it is basically just screws and a few connectors.

If you wish to have a technician replace this, the labor should be in the $150-200 if you were to take it to a shop. Please add a trip charge if done in the home.

Let me know,if needed further assistance.

Hope i helped you.

Thanks for using ' Fixya ' and have a nice day!!

Lost red

Hello
Your Tvs red output has gone out. It may be due to a driver transistor probelm or an Ic problem. If your tv circuit uses transistors to drive red, green and blue; red drive transistor has opened. If it uses Ic in video output stage, Ic is damaged.
Just check the voltages of the cathodes of other two, that is , take the voltage of green and blue cathode. Voltage at the red cathode must be very near to the same as the other two. In your case, voltage at the red cathode may be high, due to the trouble of the above said transistor.
You haven't stated about the picture condition. The above said will be correct, if the picture is correct, eventhough it has no proper colour balance. If picture is not there, the falult may be in the chroma section of your tv.

Dead. No power. The TV

This is a failed power supply / power board for sure. It can be repaired but is quite costly. How old is this TV? It may be much more cost effective to just replace the unit.

I have horizonca redl lines

Hello,

Occasionally, you will need to perform a convergence on a projection TV to make sure the picture quality appears correctly. Most projection TVs have an auto convergence option or a manual convergence option. Here is a brief guide on using both.

Look through your manual. Your manual will always give you the most specific directions for your particular model. Look for an "adjusting convergence" or "set manual convergence" section.

Enter the menu on your TV. Use the remote control and bring up the menu.

Choose "Convergence." This may be under "Picture Settings," "Function" or "Advanced Options."

Select a color. You will have red, green and blue to choose from. Do each one, starting with red.

Press "Enter." A crosshair pattern will appear on your screen.

Adjust vertically. If there is a horizontal red line visible, press the up or down arrow keys (or channel up or down) to adjust the convergence until the line is superimposed on the horizontal-center line of the white crosshair.

Adjust horizontally. If there is a vertical red line visible, press left or right (or volume up or down) to adjust horizontally. Do this until the line is superimposed on the vertical line of the white crosshair.

Save settings. It is important to save your settings when you are done, instead of simply exiting the menu.

Repeat these steps for all colors.

Hope this helps,

Take care

Screen is bowed on top and bottom.

Projection sets have two very common problems outlined below.

The first common problem is convergence

These sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the picture to look normal. This is called convergence.

When its out of alignment the video will look 3-D, wavy, distorted, etc. The TV can also shut down when the convergence starts to fail.

Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired.

Convergence problems are very common on all Projection TV sets including Sony, Samsung,JVC,Philip Magnavox,Panasonic,Akai,Pioneer, Hitachi,Mitsubishi,Zenith, RCA and others.

You can more info and a DIY convergenece repair kit with instructions from TV Repair Kits using the link at the end of this article.

Here are some of the most common problems with these sets...

*Screen Looks 3-D
*Colors wont align
*Screen may look distorted or warped or bowed
*No Audio/Video - TV Shuts down - May also make a constant chirping sound

Problem #2 - Another common problem is dull or washed out video.

Your set may have one or more of the following symptoms....

*Dull looking picture
*White looking picture
*Halos around objects
*Red/Orange looking picture

I have a samsung rear projection tv manufactured

Please save your money and get this unit repaired, just because the set displays a "Convergence"SYMPTOM does NOT mean that changing that board will fix the unit, 9/10 it will NOT. I see this time and time again in the shop whereby people think they can fix their TV whatever, and mistake the SYMPTOM, for the cause and try to fix, usually unsuccessfully at that. The CAUSE must be repaired as well as the symptom, simply replacing a board will seldom "Repair" anything as the original fault that caused the symptom still has NOT been fixed. Please get a "Quote" they are free and at least then you will know what is the problem, even if you decide NOT to repair you have that information. Also one MUST have a Service Manual to be able to order the parts as without this number you simply cannot get parts.. it is that simple.

EVERY THING REDISH

Make / and model? If you take a magnifying glass and look
close at the picture you will see three horizontal strips R,G,B,
when the green goes out or gets weak you get a puerpuleish/redish
tint . look to see if the green appears weaker than the red-blue lines
on the tube.If so then the green drive transistor on the neck P.C. board
is weak/dead or the resistor to the same transistor is out of tolerances
Older tv's have trimmer that allow you to compensate R,G,B, out to
the guns ,but it sound like you will need the Green output transistor
replaced.

Hi Xnavy, I am Xarmy (Armoured Corps). Our thinking goes the same way. It is the power supply as the red power light too goes off. That means that the power supply unit has gone off. And I feel that a new PSu would be a better idea than repairing it and not being sure in future.

I have a convergence problem. Who would fix that

The convergence ICs can not be fixed but you can replace them if you know to do that. The replacement cost around $7 to $15 each that mean $14 to $30 both . and a small labor of $45 if your technician is nice.
Good luck
