Sometimes these phone get stupid. Pull the battery out, wait about 30 minutes. Then put the battery back in, and turn it on. Go to your settings using a different method than you normally do, (they have a couple) and try rather than turning off your plane mode turn ON your mobile mode. Good luck.

The best way to unlock your phone is to buy unlock codes from a trusted vendor. Search internet for mobile phone unlocking websites. You will come across a thousand websites who can do this. Choose which ever you like. Do look for price comparisons and the unlocking instructions. I will suggest the website Unlock-Zone.com which is doing good service and they were recommended highly in the cell phone forums. manually assign 8.8.8.8 as the DNS setting.
Type ncpa.cpl into the Start menu search box or hit the Windows key + R
at the same time and type it in that box. Right click on the wireless
connection and select Properties. Go down to TCP/IP and select it. Click
Properties. Enter 8.8.8.8 in the Preferred DNS server box and click OK.
Click OK on the Wireless Connection Properties box.
Edit- Reboot your laptop with those new settings. I'll check back in

What i would suggest you to do, is do a firmware upgrade, and then find a Jailbreak. Firmware upgrade will unlock your phone, but will clear it out of any passwords, and you will be able to use your sim once again. The only problem is that all the Data will be erased. Then, you will only have to find a jailbreak, and unlock it.
There are two types of lock.
A consumer set passcode lock. That is easy, you just do a hard reset, which deletes all the data and reloads the software as a clean install.
Or it is locked with a PUK Lock aka a SIM Lock.
