You have bad conv. ic's.On these sets when the ic's go bad it will usually pop a fuse or burn up a few safety resistors, causing ith video to go away.
Toshiba 50hd82 Hyperboard
By your question alone the best place to start would be a good repair shop. The hyper module needs to be removed from the main chassis. After removing the two outer covers locate Cx261, Cx230, Cx270, Cz52, Cx178, Cx221, C514, Cx250, Cx670, Cx241 and Cx541. These are all 16v/10uf caps SMT but most techs simply replace them with the sub mini radial caps.

Hello greeny11
get your remote and press menu and look for close caption. Turn off clase caption and this will go away. If you need close caption , set it to CC1

hey Nina,
I did the same thing. be careful of the high voltage anode wire--other than that, it's not a hard fix. I'd be interested in knowing how it works out for you. I added two pancake fans to my IC's to keep them cooler. So far it's worked out really good. Good luck.
Wavy picture
Toshiba has posted a service bullietten related to this problem. I done a few of these repairs at the shop. IT is 11 very small surface mounted capacitors. Very very difucult soldering. On what is called the HYPERMODULE. this is the main signal processing module. We charge 250 + the parts.

The convergence amps in those units consist of two Sanyo STK392-110 Ic's that get hot enough to fry eggs.. If your storm flexed voltages enough it could have easily shorted the amps and/or take either of two pico fuses in the 24v supply line to the amps... If you're not too tech savy this is one for a reliable shop and not and expensive fix. Two Sanyo Ics and a couple pico fuses should be more than $50.00 dollars and a couple hours of labor to put them in... While they're at it have them check the caps in the hyper module and for any ring cracks in the deflection circuit...

TOSHIBA 50H72
Just finished one of these here at the shop. There is a service bulliteen from toshiba on these. There is a series of 11 16 microfad service mounted caps on a cuircit board called the hypermodule... basically the main signal processing board. that needs to be replaced. very very tricky soldering. very dificult repair. We charge about 250 in labor pluss the parts
Resistors on toshiba 50h72
The resistors are located right next to teconvergence ICs.An ohms meter will check them often you have to lift one leg out of circuit to test as they have to be within 5% tolerance. You cant miss the resistors right next to the ICs heatsink their should be quite a few of them all identical.
Convergence problem???
Check the resistors by the STK ic's, should be 2.2 ohms. Under the heat sink, also check the 1.8 Ohm 1W, fusible resistors found around the area as well.
Good Luck.

Protection mode means there is excessive current being drawn from some section of the tv. Power supply and deflection amps and convergence system are the biggest culprits but there are other causes, as well.
The foldover indication is a clear sign of a vertical deflection problem. The burn marks may mean there is a power supply meltdown caused by excessive current drawn. There could also be a horizontal meltdown going on. Temporarily lift the B+ line feeding the HOT/HV section and see if that prevents it from going into protection.
Check your soldering and other connections to make sure you did not execute a short when doing the work. If it did not go into protection before the vertical IC was changed it should not after - unless something was introduced that caused the excessive current.

Cost to repair
Screens are pricey if you can find them. What are the measurements to Your screen? The shop I work for has a couple of used screens for sale a 47 and 50 inch. I can measure them and see if the 50 is the same size.

Check
here or
here and do a search on the part you need. I would suggest that before changing those ICs you check the micro/pico fuses near where the ICs are connected as well the low values resistors.
Good Luck.
