These suffer from dry joints. Look around any large component that is mounted on a heat sink and resolder the legs of them.

Projection sets have two very common problems.

The first common problem is convergence

These sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the picture to look normal. This is called convergence.

When its out of alignment the video will look 3-D, wavy, distorted, etc. Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired. Convergence problems are very common on all Projection TV sets including Sony, Samsung,JVC,Philip Magnavox,Panasonic,Akai,Pioneer, Hitachi,Mitsubishi,Zenith and others.
You can get more information and a DIY convergenece repair kit with instructions from the link below.

Here are some of the most common problems with these sets...

*Screen Looks 3-D
*Colors wont align
*Screen may look distorted or warped
*No Audio/Video - TV Shuts down - May also make a constant chirping sound

Problem #2 - Another common problem is dull or washed out video.

Your set may have one or more of the following symptoms....

*Dull looking picture
*White looking picture
*Halos around objects
*Red/Orange looking picture

The most likely cause is shorted convergence chips and possibly a few pico fuses.

Hi I am Vortash , Its possible the IR detector has gone but unlikely , it is more likely that due to a low battery in a remote the signals have corrupted the remote processor this used to happen a lot with the old EMI and Bush sets and sometimes it is just a fact that the remote has given up the ghost . You can check to see if your remote is working with your Iphone or any phone camera . Put the phone on record and place the remote in front of the lens , if it is working you should be able to see the infrared diode flashing in the phones viewscreen . If it is working you will need to find out the de- corruption proceadure for your model of set hope this helps regards Vortash

Unplug the tv and take the particle board cover off the back of the tv. Abive the chassis, you will see a panel with 2 gold screws in in... it is an access to the tube lenses. Remove this panel and sneak your hand and a soft cloth up in there. Wipe the dust off the top of the lenses. See if this helps, best wishes.

You have one of two problems. Sometimes both.

Problem #1) CRT Fluid is Cloudy

Projection TV tubes have a liquid coolant that is used to keep them from overheating. After many years the coolant in the blue and green tubes will become cloudy and cause the screen to look dull, red/orange, etc. You may even see halos around images.

Picture of a set that needs the fluid changed.

What you will need to do is replace the coolant and clean the crt. You can get a repair kit from www.TvRepairKits.com that includes replacement coolant, photos. instructions, etc.

Problem #2)

Your TV may have a convergence failure. ( common problem )

Here are some of the most common symptoms and example photos of a convergence problem

  • Screen looks 3D
  • Colors don't line up
  • One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
  • Screen is bowed or warped.
Here are some photos of convergence problems.

Here is a quick test....

Using your original remote go-to the tv settings then goto the convergence section.

Try to adjust the red and then the blue convergence.

You should be able to move them up, down, left, and right.

If you can't move them in all directions your convergence chips are bad and should be replaced. This is a common problem.

You will need to replace the convergence chips and possibly some convergence resistors and pico fuses. Its a fairly easy DIY job or you can hire a pro. If you want to do the repair yourself check the site www.TvRepairKits.com. Their kits include a step by step picture instruction guide, original OEM parts, convergence resistors, pico fuses, thermal paste, email/phone support, etc.

If you can't adjust the red convergence in one direction then it is probably one of the convergence IC's. Before you replace the IC's, check for bad solder connections at the IC's and output resistors below the heatsink.
You should replace both at once for reliability. Make sure the tv is unplugged for at least 5 minutes before poking around. The power cord can be unplugged from the power board and removed to keep anyone from plugging it in while you are working on it.
The STK's are the large 18 pin integrated circuits (chips) mounted to the large heat sink on the convergence board. This is the board on the right when viewed from the back of the TV.
The resistors are beneath the heat sink on the left side of the board. There are also fusible resistors, like #7711, on that side.
Also check the fuses on the Power board. This is the board on the left when viewed from the back of the TV. You can remove both boards in the carrier by carefully unplugging all connectors, noting their locations and routing.
To remove the high voltage wires from the splitter, mark them for position then grasp the boot and turn counter-clockwise about 10 degrees to unlock them and then pull up while holding the High voltage splitter. The small high voltage wire can be removed from the flyback transformer by pulling hard while holding the flyback.
STK392-110 can be replaced with STK392-120, STK392-180, STK394-160.
I have found most of the parts at newark.com. Also check out this site for some very good info: http://www.hometheatershack.com/forums/diy-repair-maintenance/5600-crt-based-rptv-convergence-repairs.html
btw: I am not affiliated in any way.
Make sure that while you have the boards out you look for any bad solder connections. A lot of problems arise or return because of this.
I hope this helps, I have been doing a lot of searching to get this info and hope it helps you.

Too many people want to trickle the info and pretend they are giving you gold. A few hobbyists or people that can't afford to pay $300+ for repairs are not going to hurt their business.
Be safe and share knowlege freely!

Newark electronics has very good prices for the Sanyo STK's. I wouldn't recommend buying the cheapest one you can find because it will be a copy and go bad again. The STK392-180 can be used. It has a higher rating and only costs $10 at newark.com.
You should replace both STK's and check the resistors near the heat sink and the fuses on the power board. Also check all of the solder joints.

Hi,
This problem is related with convergence out ICs that seems failed and causing 3D look picture.
Replace convergence out ICs (two ICs) to get back correct converge picture in your Toshiba 42H83 tv.
Required IC, STK392-110 is available in Part Store.
Please note, above ICs replacement requires soldering work in circuit board with proper tools, if you are comfortable doing so in tv then can replace it with yourself of ask local tech to do this job.
Let me know if you have additional question.
Thanks.
