Hi. The carousel loading belt probably needs replacing - that's why you are "helping" it. You could try cleaning the cd lens too if it's not selecting an reading cds. HTH Replacement belts and laser units are on ebay.

You don't state the model, so we are running blind here. It should be fairly obvious. For the CD press the CD button. Then press the door button and put the CD on the tray. Then press play or the door button again. If the CD player works it should play the music. Same with the cassette. Drop the cassette into the holder, push it back in place then press play.

Are you talking about the overall case screws or some screws inside the unit? If it is inside the unit, then it might be that the CD player mechanism is a sealed unit and not meant to be entered. Instead the whole unit would need to be replaced. I know that some Panasonic units are like that.
