Choosing Between Fixing or Changing My Roof

You have to look at the expected life of the roofing shingles that were put on. Although they will often last a lot longer than the warranty, it does give some indication. The difference in warranty is based on the thickness. Wind can cause nail to tear out, or a shingle to slip. Those repairs are an easy fix, but it also depends on how many need fixing. The higher the number the more it leads to full replacement being the best option. ..

Metal vs. asphalt shingles for residential roofing: which is better and why?

It depends on a variety of factors, including cost, longevity, style, and local climate. Metal is the most durable roofing material, but it can be quite expensive and is not suitable for certain architectural styles. Asphalt shingles are much more economical and typically last 20-30 years, depending on the climate and other external factors. In some climates, asphalt is still the preferred choice because it is better at resisting damage caused by extreme cold or snow. Ultimately, the best option will depend on personal preference and budget.

New deck roof right at window sill.

Ask your local authority to send a building inspector. They will do it for free and will tell the builder what is wrong. You don't fix a problem like that by removing a windowsill. The roof should lead to just below a brick course and flashing should be inlet and cemented into that course of bricks. ..

Water Leaks and Potential Chimney Flashing Issue on Older Roof

If it is near the chimney, it will almost certainly be the flashing although water normally runs down the internal brickwork as well. Unless the wet area is further down the slope from the chimney. Water always follows gravity but can be deviated by just a roof nail in the way. Another thing to check is that you haven't lost the capping shingle that folds over the top of the apex of the roof. That shingle is susceptible to wind damage.

What kind of roofing knee pads

Rather than knee pads, if you can't stay on your feet, the foam from couch cushions are the way to go. They don't slide on asphalt shingles, and are usually free. Just scoot around on your back side. Be careful of it rolling up though.

What does it happen when my gutters get clogged up?

Hey Mark, Thanks a great questions I have been asked many times by other fellow Australians. So here's the deal. Clogged gutters are among the prime reasons for fires in both the residential and commercial real estate sector. Bush fires are a common and disastrous events in places like Australia where the climate is harsh. Even in Sydney, one of the most populated cities in the country, the temperature often exceeds the bearable maximum and the air humidity is at its lowest. Despite being a coastal city, it's a region where bush fires can occur and homeowners need to be aware of the techniques that must be applied during the seasonal temperature peaks. Reducing the dry vegetation around the property is an essential part of preventing any bush fire. Yet, there are many flammable materials and items which can be found outdoors and the clogged gutters are one of them.To prevent an unexpected ignition, homeowners should always keep their gutters dirt and grime-free. While it is recommended that the removal of leafs and dirt should be done by a professional gutter cleaning team, homeowners can do still do it themselves while following the local regulations. In Sydney, for example, there are specific rules for water use in Sydney and working from heights should be complied with the state's requirements. In severe situations with a high risks of a fire, gutters must be filled with water to provide additional security for the building. Keypoints Here are the prime reasons you should take care of your gutters:
  • to prevent water damage
  • to prevent fire harardz
  • to prevent pest infestations

Is it possible to build your own gutters?

Technically it is possible to build your own gutter. I would do it using PVC piping. But frankly, I don't think it's worth it because getting the measurement exact could be a problem. Plus, PVC can be very heavy so you might not want to put that much strain on your roof.

Need class a chimney flashing for penetration

Hello Stephen. I do understand what you are talking about with your flashing. Your supplier of the standing seam metal should have similar metal flashing to use on any of your roof flashing points. There is a process to install flashing on a chimney or any other protrusions, If you are still interested post some pictures of what you have and I will explain the best I can. It takes years of experience to do some flashings especially on standing seam metal.
