there can be a number of reasons why a disc cannot be read. I will give you a link to my tips on how this can be fixed.

Also I will write some additional information here.
1. Check and see if the motor is spinning.
2. If the motor is
spinning you might have a issue with the laser optical itself. Or the laser motor witch moves the laser back and forth.
A. Try a cleaning kit first
B. opening up the unit and see if the laser is being moved , Careful this is a class 1 laser device and an be
dangerous if you do not feel
save on this bring it to a expert.
Simply unplugging the unit or restarting its software WILL NOT HELP you must consider AGE,DUST,DEBRIS in the factor here.
9 times out of 10 its best to buy a new player then trying to
fix a old one. DVD players go for under $30 bucks, good ones go for $75 or greater, To
fix the unit your going to have trouble with finding parts etc,etc
