That ribbon cable is a tedious repair, and the best you can hope for is that you are a fairly good tech yourself, or to send it off for repair...accordianman

Sound like you have a back-light issue with the LCD. Not sure what kind of technology they use to back-light the LCD, but on all LCD monitors and TV's they use CCFL. Cold Cathode Fluorescent Lamps can burn out or can get damaged. Not sure if the DVD player uses them or not, you just need to open the back panel of the LCD and see what they use. Also CCFLs need an Inverter circuit to convert the DC current to AC current. If it uses CCFLs than it can only be 2 things the Lamps or the Inverter circuit. Check the lamps, if they look dark at the ends, than most likely a bad lamp. If the lamps look fine, than you will need a volt meter to check the status of the inverter.
Sound but no picture, Won't play certain dvds, freezes
Hi Mulvey....I see that you have discovered, grasped, and walked into the light regarding this, and all other posts for this 'ahem' brand.
So why don't we just convert it to a Region Free player by following the steps below. Please keep in mind that this will not correct all of the problems with this 'ahem' brand, but it will certainly enable greater DVD compatibility.
Turn on your player, and using your remote, (i'm assuming that THAT still works) enter the following commands:
1) Menu
2) 1
3) 9
4) Highlight "Region"
5) Enter
6) 0
7) Enter
8) C
Please update your post regardless if your results were positive or negative, so we can either continue chipping away, or so that others with similar situations can glean their corrective measures from your post.....good luck my friend

Try Sears or Circuit City for repairs...but not sure, cyberhome went out of buisness, so no luck there.
Won't play any dvds
I had the same problem, believe it or not i gently tap the side of machine several times and seem to have done the trick. It seem that optical reader was stuck and the gently tap freed it up,i believe this is the clicking you heard maybe trying to free it self.by the way i get the message that there was no disc present to read. Also the plug in hole for the power unit was loose and jiggly,I had to jiggle it around to the right spot for it to work.I hope this helps a few folks with power problem as well, one more thing about the battery thing you should understand they have memory and should be ran down completly before recharging.

Getting a signal from a DVD is a very complicated process, involving bouncing a laser beam off of the DVD, digital electronics, microcomputers, & sophisticated programming. In this tangle of signals & programming, it is not uncommon for a glitch to prevent the player from performing correctly. There is nothing wrong with your player, per se, except that it glitches on those particular discs. The solution is to simply not play those discs on that player. This phenomenon has happened with every optical storage device since the very first laser disc player. Some players simply don't like some discs. You can try a lens cleaner disc, but it is unlikely to make any difference. This problem is just an aspect of the technology, & is not going to get any worse.

check if the dvd player is compatable for mp3 and cds. also make sure the cds not copied try putting in a now 67 cd or something like that

clean the lense on the optical pickup using a cotton q-tip; just flick it a few times over the lens. that will knock off the invisible, microscopic junk that may be collected on it.
clean the discs that are giving trouble. use mild dish soap and warm water. rinse off with cool water. air dry in dish rack. that is the best way
try a hard reset. unplug the power cord on the player for 30 minutes; then try it again.I hope this helps!!!!
