check for a reverse lock tab that holds the motor down when reversing with tilt control that tab should be release when up is selected

You can leave the shift lever in forward gear as the system is sprung loaded so that if anything goes wrong at sea with the linkage there is always the option of getting home. just be careful to ensure smooth relocation on the splined shaft into the linkage socket when reassembling. Before fully tightening the casing bolts on reassembly bring the remote back into the neutral position, then see if the prop spins freely without engaging any gears. If happy finally torque up the five casing bolts.

if ignition attached to a dashboard fuses in behind dash board. should be marked. if motor is tiller steering then the fuses are inline or tucked in housing. back track from problem.
