Is the "dead" hard drive 80GB? or 500GB? I presume you set up this hard drive as the second hard drive, or as an external drive. You can do these: 1. Disk Management (check the readablility): Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Computer Management (please run as administrator; right click it), Disk Management. Is this hard drive info exist in this screen? If it is, then the hard drive is not dead. Click on the hard drive info, right click, and you can do some actions (format, expand the volume, assign a drive letter, etc.) 2. You don't have to swap drivers in windows it just a generic driver for all hard drives unless your using AHCI but that's generic too if your already using it. Just shut the machine down, don't get any static sparks from you fingers on anything, touch the metal PC tower firmly first, swap the drive, restart the computer and install windows. If the drive is in already and it's for a second drive and your PC isn't recognizing it it meamns your PC is to old and you need the Western Digital Acronis free version and you'll have to keep it installed on your computer for the life of the drive, it has a Tool or Utility called extended capacity manager that will recognize your drive properly. I can't see a SATA 2 drive being used in anything old enough to need software to recognize 500gigs. You wouldn't be able to use SATA.

Your WD has probably gone belly up. If you can't get it to register on either computer and you've tried different computers then it has croaked.Were you able to use it in the past on the windows computer and the mac? If so, that's strange because they are two different formats and most times when you plug the drive into one or the other it will want to reformat it to be able to access it.

..as i know when HDD start beeping ( internal or portable ) that indicate problem with the Hard Drive (HDD)..so nothing you can do it by your self ....if the HDD is under warranty from factory you may take it to the store that you buy or nearest Western Digital distributor to claim the warranty...but if it doesn't in warranty..that's mean a problem why?because if HDD start beeping like you have, the possibility to make it work again is almost impossible that mean you maybe lost the data that you save in this HDD..

SATA stands for Serial ATA and describes the interface used to connect to your PC. Many older PCs have ATA or UDMA, an IDE type interface. Many newer PCs have a SATA interface. You can buy and add a SATA interface card if no additional SATA ports are available on your system. SATA drives have a small data connector and a larger power connector. Each drive has it's own SATA data cable, no daisey-chaining like IDE drives did. Since there is no daisey-chain there are no jumpers that need setting for Master and Slave.

You should not even try to install an operating system on an external drive. Windows looks at the "C" drive and installs programs to "C" drive. You are trying to put it on the "G" drive. You will have too many problems and wish you never had tried. Buy a larger main drive and partition it with two equal partitions. Then "Dual Boot". You will find how to do this on the internet.
