You have described a typical convergence problem. It takes skills in unsoldering and soldering to get it fixed. There are two convergence IC's that need to be changed and possibly a resistor if open. You have to determine if the picture before it went out looks good enough to spend money on. Typically the parts, technical charge and service call will cost you on average of about $300. However, since the set is already 10 years old I would venture to say that the tubes are getting weak and does not have much life left in them. I would recommend upgrading to an LCD or LED television for just a few dollars more. If you take on the project yourself, I must tell you that you need to be proficient in electronic soldering and unsoldering. The IC's are mounted side by side on a metal heat sink and are about 2 inches by about 4 inches and are soldered in with 18 pins each. Use desoldering braid to remove and when solder the new ones be careful not to bridge the pins with solder. Also when unsoldering care must be taken not to break the printed circuit. And look for a burned resistor which is a cylinder shaped object with metal wires out both ends and going into the board. You can identify the value of the burned resistors by comparing the ones that are similar in the circuit and are not burned. Usually there are two side by side

My tv won't turn on

Hello,

The issue you describe is consistent with a power supply board issue. This is the board where the AC goes to. This problem may have occurred as a result of irregular power supply, or excess power supply or power surge.

The TV is receiving current but cannot circulate or transfer the current to other necessary part of the TV because of the defective power supply board.

I do not think it needs replacement, rather some defective capacitors are causing this issue.
Open unit up and take a look at the power supply board. You will probably see one or more electrolytic filter capacitors that are bulged up in the top-not perfectly flat like the others.

The value of these capacitors will be different, most likely they will be somewhere around-820 to 2200uF/25 V( or /10V sometimes)

You can replace them with same values but I would recommend the voltage rating to be higher(like 35V for an original 25V) for reliability purposes.

What happens is,these bulged top capacitors will cause a low and unfiltered DC voltage=main board will malfunction(the relay will keep clicking until the caps are holding enough charge to bring the voltage up over a threshold point).

Note: There may be also some other causes for this symptom ,like a defective T con board ,or main board, but the bulged top capacitors are the most common cause for this issue.

If you don't know about TV repairers, take the TV to the nearest repairman to fix the fault for you. Also, note that TV stores a lot of current, so wait a while before opening the TV back cover.

I hope this helps.

Good luck....

I have a blue patch

The patches on screen in LCD projection tv's is associated with collapsing light tunnel which is a part of the optical block. More often than not, this particular repair is not cost effective(costs about 1000$+), unless the tech is willing to replace only the light tunnel.

EVRYTHING IN THE PICTURE HAS A GREEN TINT TO IT,

mien557,

Your problem is a bad optical engine. These units run with alot of heat and sometimes it cooks the TFT panels or the panels weren't made correctly and go south sooner than expected.

You will have to replace the optical engine or have a technician do it. I have a tip at http://www.fixya.com/support/r4251975-replace_dlp_light_engine which explains in detail how to remove the old engine and install a new unit as well as where to get it at the best price.

Thanks for using FixYa and for the generous rating.

Over time a thin layer of fungi grows over the top of your BLUE CRT preventing light fronm shining through. This causes you to loose the blue color in your set. Check and clean. Also when the back is off your set check to see if your blue CRT is on. If not you may need to replace it.

Screen issues

A new screen is prohibitive in cost.
put 90% isoprophyl alcohol in a spray bottle;
Spray it where the febreeze went, really saturate it, then let the set sit for 24 hours before you turn it on.
This usually works; if not you must disassemble the screen and, difuser screens from the television.

Green picture and distorted

Projection TV sets are known to have two common problems. The first problem that is common to these sets is convergence failure. When this happens the TV will usually look 3D, Wavy/Distorted, etc. It may also shutdown and blink an error code.

The second common problem with Projection TV sets is dull video, halos around objects, white looking video, or red overpowers the screen. This is commonly caused by the fluid in the lens being clouded overs. To get fixed either call in a local TV repair company or goto sites such as Tv Repair Kits to get a repair kit with instructions. Here is there link.

They have put together complete kits for most models that include the parts, step by step photo instructions, repair assistance, etc.

Green tint to screen

These sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the picture to look normal. This is called convergence.

When its out of alignment the video will look 3-D, wavy, distorted, etc. Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired. Convergence problems are very common on all Projection TV sets including Sony, Samsung,JVC,Philip Magnavox,Panasonic,Akai2_bing.gif,Pioneer, Hitachi,Mitsubishi,Zenith and others.
You can get more information and a DIY convergenece repair kit with instructions from the link below.

Here are some of the most common problems with these sets...

Problem #1) Convergence

Yours may have one or more of the following symptoms...

*Screen Looks 3-D
*Colors wont align
*Screen may look distorted or warped
*No Audio/Video - TV Shuts down - May also make a constant chirping sound

Problem #2 - Another common problem is dull or washed out video.

Your set may have one or more of the following symptoms....

*Dull looking picture
*White looking picture
*Halos around objects
*Red/Orange looking picture
