Need help with my iriver ifp799 doesnt turn on
cajunito,
After more than 4 years of everyday use, mine stopped as well. The problem was that the [Play] button/switch soldering dislodged from the PCB. I opened the player and resoldered the [start/play/stop/off] switch back on the PCB. It now works again. I noticed the problem because I could still get the player to operate by using more force and put some side pressure on the switch, which apparently pushed the switch and the PCB together to make contact again.
With a problem like you have there can be many different causes, so this might not be your solution.

Will not start playing
Snooper1,
This happens when you load a file that has a filename that is extremely long. If you use UMS firmware, you can just connect to the USB cable again, find the long filename and shorten it (use the [F2] key to reduce the name length, but keep the extension to .mp3.)

Getting music off Iriver
Bronte,
When you change your firmware from the "manager" version to e.g. the Firmware v1.85 UMS version, you will no longer need to use the iriver manager software to move mp3's around, you can just drop them on or from your iriver. The disadvantages are that:
1. by upgrading to the UMS version, you will wipe ALL your current music, so it will NOT help you right now, only after you have upgraded to the UMS version and placed mp3's on there again. The iriver will behave like an external thumb-drive, so you can use it on any PC without the iriver manager.
2. The UMS firmware will ONLY run in USB 1.0 speeds, so it will take up to 36 minutes to fill the iriver up with 1 GB of music (or in my case podcasts).

Drivers
I just reinstalled my IFP-799 on Windows XP. I installed the iRiver music manager v3.16 software first.
http://iriverinc.com/support/ultra/700.aspx
and then when complete I plugged in my IFP-799. The new hardware wizard started trying to install it and for some odd reason it failed. I then went to Start-Control Panel-System-Hardware-Device Manager and saw a yellow triangle next to iRiver Internet Audio Player IFP-799. I double-clicked on that and it said the driver was not installed properly but showed a button to click on the install. I clicked that and a popup box came up with a choice to install automatically. I clicked on Yes and the hardware manager correctly installed the driver that time.
Sorry but I don't know how to install this if you have some other Windows version however the website I listed will have the instructions.
Good luck.
My iRiver e200 does hang...and it displays "USB busy.. Do not Disconnect if I connect it to PC. And I cannot play my MP3s
Hi there! Well it sounds like the flash memory in your device has failed. This may not be the case. There is no way to say without testing and diagnostics, however if you can not access the files saved to the memory via the device(Playing the files) and the computer can not access that memory when connected, there is a strong possibility that your memory has failed. I am not sure the age of the device but it is well documented that all flash memory will at some point fail because it can only be read and re/written X amount of times(this is normal). Typically most devices will reach "EOL"(End Of Life), or end of use before the memory fails. The likely hood of recovering the files located within the inaccessible memory is very unlikely but may be possible. Replacing the memory chip in the device is possible but not feasible. I hope I have been able to help you today. Please if I misunderstood your question let me know so I can get you the appropriate help. Thank's Mr.Mike
