Opc error.. it

Web search "optimum power calibration error". The manual incorrectly calls it Optimize Power Control on Page 2. It has nothing to do with the source and all to do with the media and how the laser calibrates to it.

Try removing the cover, then check the glass fuse marked 1.25A/125V for continuity. If bad replace the fuse with a new one with the same rating.

I've burned 100's of CDR's

Hi Mike.

You are experiencing a lens problem.

When you have a lens problem, the lens pickup may still be able to read disks, but it may loose writing capability, not mocusing anymore the laser beam reflected from the blank media. When this happens , the system will not be able to read blank media TOC (first track on the disk), and will react as there is no disk inside the unit.

To fix the problem you can start first cleaning lens, if that is not enough, you will need to have the lens pickup, or the whole optical drive replaced.

To attempt cleaning the lens you can first try using a cleaner disk. Possibly a kit with cleaning solution.

If that is not enough, the next step is taking apart the unit (remove screws at back and bottom and remove upper cover), and cleaning the lens directly with aid of QTips and isopropyl alcohol solution or disk cleaning solution.
Cleaning lens directly there is always a little risk of making situation worse by displacing the lens pickup. Be very careful and do it at your risk.

If all the above is not enough, then the lens pickup must be replaced.
This is a delicate operation and must be done by a technician. Lens replacement as home repair usually ends with lens having wrong orientation and not reading the disks.

If you want to get a quote on repair, contact JVC at the number listed on the owners manual.

Try first cleaning the lens.

Do not forget to leave us feedback later.

Best regards.

Have JVC XL-R5000 CD recorder. When

It sounds like it may be a media issue or a laser issue with your exact unit, this is not all that uncommon. If you say your friend is able to use your actual device to record with but different media (type of cds) then that pretty much confirms that it is the media. But I think what you are saying is that he is using a different actual device, even thought it's the same model, with the same media you are using. If that is the case then it sounds like the actual laser on your unit is on it's way out. If there is an option to try to record at a lower speed (I think there is on this unit) then try that. Also, try another brand / type of media just for fun, it's possible that you got a bad batch of discs. It's also possible that even though your friend has the exact same model they may have used a different cd recorder unit internally (no way for you to tell this except taking the unit apart). If that's the case it could be that the type of recorder you have doesn't like your media, but his recorder does.

Between all of those troubleshooting steps you will be able to narrow down whether or not its the discs you are using, or the actual recording device. Keep in mind that just because it reads cds fine doesnt mean that it will be able to record them fine as well.

If all else fails give JVC a call to see if they have any advanced troubleshooting techniques or can offer repair on the unit, maybe it's still under warranty? Their number is 800-882-2345.

Hope this helps!

Thanks for your time and understanding,

CDR shows No Disc

Have you tried to use a optical disk cleaner? it will remove dirt from the optical eye and is the first thing I would try. Since it won't read any disks then the optical eye may be dirty you can buy at Radio Shack, Staples, Office supply stores and Wall mart or Wallgreens Pharmacy you can order online at fry's or tiger direct.com hope this helps, if you need more help just post here.
