You can buy consumer lens cleaning disc or take it to someone that`ll take the cover off and clean the laser with q-tip and mild solution.

Hi Robert,First of all, thank you for posting your question here at Fixya. You may try the steps below to resolve the issue.Assuming that the disc is good.1.Clean the lens. -Sometimes because of dust and any fine foreign objects the optical lens can'tread any disc. If you have a CD Lens cleaner, play it to the unit. If this isnot available you may manually clean the optical lens. Open the cover andgently clean the eye of the lens by smooth, clean, soft cotton buds. Be carefulwhile doing this, just a gentle stroke only.2.Check the ribbon - Checkthe ribbon connected to the lens from the main board for scratch, damage. Once it has anopen line then of course the lens can't read the disc, this is because of themovement of the optical lens back-and-forth. Also try to erase the contact by pencileraser. If you've done the steps above and the symptoms still there then thenext step requires you a little knowledge in soldering technique and readingthe ohmmeter.3.Check the spindle motor -Check the spindle motor that spin the disc with an ohmmeter. You can test itusing the ohmmeter (x1) even it is connected on the lens assembly.Good motor - reading should be fairly high and itwill spin. Bad motor-reading will drop to low resistance and will not spin or spin slowly.HopeI helped you.Have a nice day! Thanks for using Fixya.

There is a little slide switch under the main power button on the upperleft hand corner - switch it from karaoke mode to normal mode.

Hi Shane, sounds like a dirty or worn laser. If memory serves there are two screws on each side and two on the upper rear. Once the lid is off you should be able to see cd laser. If so you need a cotton bud ( ear plug ) and a dash of Isoproponol ( from any chemist )...make sure unit is switched off...soak end of bud in isoproponol and wipe over laser ensuring it is clean..leave for 30 minutes and switch on and put disk in to check..hope this helps..

If the status screen on your TV doesn't indicate any response to the knob I'd say the control is defective. Maybe a hands-on tech can repair it.

I imaginme the elusive XL-MX303 manual explains that.

If you don't have any manual, try this XL-MV338 CD/Karaoke Player manual

JVC doesn't list that model but this manual should get you going in the right direction...

Your JVC CD player has some mechanical trouble. It does not load CDs fully into the tray. Either tray loading motor or its belt iis faulty. Replace the belt first and see it helps you. If not replace the loading motro. For both, you have to open and disassemble your CD player. If you are able to do it, and have confidence, proceed. OK
Happy New Year.
