The volume is probably controlled by an IC that does all the work. It most likely has failed. It's unlikely that the wheel is the cause of the trouble, unless it has broken leaving the circuit fully open. But I think that unlikely.
If the unit has not been used for sometime then the second fault will probably due to the belts turning to goo!

Any audio device that has a headphone output can be adapted to feed an RCA cable pair for standard stereo to any audio device with a standard RCA input (except one labeled "PHONO"). Get a cable like the one described here: http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?c_id=102&cp_id=10218&cs_id=1021804&p_id=665&seq=1&format=2
and connect it into any available analog input on ANY audio device EXCEPT one labeled "Phono".

Hi, I just set the time on my mx-d301t and it goes like this: First you need to put the device to standby mode (red light and the time are showing). Then you take the remote and press first SHIFT button and then CLOCK button (number 1) one after another and the time should start blinking. Next you can set the time by using the SELECT buttons - (number 4) and + (number 5). When the time is right you just need to press SET button (number 8) and the time should stop blinking. There you go, the time is set. -amigo

There are rubber drive parts used in the cassette mechanism, and over time they wear out. Infrequent use can hasten the rubber failure (similar to how a car's tires can go bad if a car sits idle for a long time). An overhaul by a stereo service shop, a good cleaning and replacement of the affected parts, will bring it back to life.

Check if there is something jammed in your tray.Or it might be the wheels that might have gone unfunctional.
There is a small hole on the tray where you can stick a pin or something small to eject. It might only be once that this problem is happening. So try it.

First, and the best choice really, is to take it in for servicing. Second, is to remove the chassis and try to determine if you've just got a disc that's jammed the mechanism. If so, remove it and replace the chassis and see if operation goes back to normal. If it doesn't then there's a problem with the motor which opens the tray and you'd have to take it in for servicing at that point.

You can take a dry q-tip and clean off the lens of the laser assy. This is all that a consumer can do. Otherwise take it to a repair shop.

Silmilar problem on a MX-D501T
At times the unit fails to recognise the music CD in the tray, or recognises its presence and shows tracks & time play on screen but doesn't initiate playing. The fault is erratic. Pushing 'play' on the remote doesn't initiate either.
Is this a faulty head or 'dry joints' somwhere?

well..that looks to be a clear indication that you have a lens cleaning challenge. Believe it or not, it 's not unlike the old head cleaning for audio and video players. Now, here's the rub, the cleaning kits that are recommended are quite dear. Let me see which ones are available for this unit.

Change your Home Station in the DAB settings. If you do that and it reverts back, there _may_ be a motherboard battery that needs replacing. It is losing its memory when it is turned off.
