If the 5volt supply is not missing, due to a dry joint on the front panel, check for data on pin 2 of the IR receiver. The receiver module is a common part to most Philips machines. The main micro is not likely to be at fault.

Marantz SR 5200/6200 lost audio or crackling on left or right channel except in mode s-direct is now fixed !
The root cause is a defective inegrated circuit on DSP board (the one with digital inputs). To fix it change the chip CS4391 by a new one or better by the improved version CS4392. On my device a capacitor was cut close to this IC : replace one 1uF after changing the IC. For any question search me with my callsing "F5RCT"; i have a spare IC for the one who is able to change it !

When you buy a universal remote there should be a code sheet with it, just make shure that your brand is listed on the package that the remote is in before you buy it,

Register and download the manual for free at retrevo.com

I can't really find an explicit reference to it in the manual but I'm thinking it's checking the potential digital assigments first as most AVR's default to a preference for digital in, then switch to analog if the digital signal is not present or drops; and return to digital if the signal reappears.

Page 11 talks about the default and manual assignments of digital inputs. They don

I will interperate this as:
"So you want to play sound through your Marantz SR-4200?"

You need to clarify what sort of system setup you have, however i will put down a few ways to wire this up to your TV.

If you have a Set-top-box that gets the TV Channels, that is where the sound comes from. If you have a TV that plugs straight into the wall, you will have to get the sound from the TV. Grab a RCA Stereo cable - (White and Red heads, if you don't know what they look like, Google it).

If you are unclear about this, i have tried to make a diagram down the bottom to explain how this is to work. What you will do is Take the sound from the Set-Top-Box or TV and reroute it into your fantastic Marantz SR-4200.

1. Plug Red Plug into the the Red Slot, and White into the White on the back of your set-top-box or TV Out (if you get it around the wrong way, the speakers will be reversed.)

2. Plug the other end of the cable into the back of your Marantz SR-4200 in the TAPE input or VHS input as they are analog signal inputs. Turn on Marantz SR-4200 and turn it onto Tape or Vhs (depending on where you plugged it in).

[Set-Top-Box or TV out] >-------> into >------> [Marantz SR-4200]

If you still don't get it, then try searching You-Tube for a guide "Plug Tv into Stereo". I myself couldn't turn up anything useful

Component Video is a big step up the food chain in quality. Component Video inputs are for video only, not for audio. I don't see Component Video inputs on the Marantz SR-4200; only Composite and S-Video. S-video would be a step up from Composite and it carries analog stereo sound.

You don't give any clues as to the source's audio capabilities.

Digital Audio of either flavor is preferable. Grab the best possible TV-related audio from your Cable/Satellite box to the Marantz and run a pair of RCA audio cables to your TV just in case you want to watch the weather channel without hi-fi sound.

Have you gone into the TV's menu to make sure that the audio outoput is not set to "variable"?

On my Sony I have the option to set the audio output as "fixed or "variable"

make sure its set to fixed

if that's not it try a different input on your receiver. you can use anything EXCEPT PHONO.

Lastly on my Denon receiver I have to specify how each input should get its signal if you are using an optical cable then you may have to go into the menu and tell it to look for a digital signal not an analog one.

Hope that helps

Not unless you know how to troubleshoot solid state electronics. If you disconnected the speakers and the unit still goes into the protect mode, most likely you have a short in one of the power output stages. Good Luck
