WD hard drive ditects but doesnt respond
this can be a couple of things either the HDD is faulty OR the HDD has read/write protection on it.
So for read/write protection go to my computer and right click on the disk that doesn't work and go properties, then click on the security tab, in a box below there will be some usernames including yours, click your one and click the edit box below.
now elevate your permissions to full access read/write.
now if the HDD is faulty.
this will require more work but will give you a better idea.
so first off you will need to acquire a Knoppix ISO image from the internet once you have this you will also need universal USB installer.
now you have these both open up the USB installer insert a 1gb USB and select the Knoppix image and let it build.
now that's done take your new USB and plug into your pc whilst it is turned off.
next turn the pc on but rapidly press one of these F2-F10-F12-del until you are taken into the BIOS menu.
now look through the menus until you find one with boot order or priority, what you want to do is set it to boot to the USB first once your happy with that save and exit and boot normally. it should boot into Knoppix here you can try and access your files.
so navigate to my computer (or equivalent) until you find your hdd
Question about retreiving data from external hard drive.
There are no problems hooking a external hard drive to any computer. If you mean take the hard drive out of the external case and putting it inside of your computer with a SATA cable, you can do that to. If your worried that they are both Western Digital, there are no conflicts with that either.
Good Luck
Hibernation partition
Make sure you have the HDD in the same state as it was on Hibernating. If it was removed after Hibernation, it will not be 'seen' by the PC. Everything that was connected during Hibernation MUST be connected again when starting the machine so the O/S can follow the route.
Permission reset
Login with Administrator account on Windows (Root account on Linux) connect the WD passport, access the files / change the permissions.

Western digital 2tb my passport keeps blinking; not detected
It is possible that the computer was still accessing the drive when you unplugged it. Depending on what it was doing this could have corrupted files on the HDD. Does your "device manager" see the drive at all... either as a drive or USB device?

I strongly suggest you purchase a Hitachi hard drive, I have replaced several WD's due to the problem you have. I have never had an IBM/Hitachi hard drive fail and I have used dozens of them over the last 15 years in new builds as well as repairs.
