20 Most Recent Seagate U5 (ST320413A) 20 GB Hard Drive Questions & Answers

Hi,

Basically 2 options I think.
1. If you feel comfortable working with electronics, familiar with a DVM (looks like) and a soldering iron, it possible to check the electronic board of the HD. You need to do component level check of that PCB. Some of these old HDs have a reverse protection diode installed right after the power connector. At times it could be the surface mounted capacitor. The worst is the servo drive that powers the motor. Normally, the 12V in an HD is for use of the motor while the 5V is for the logic circuitry.

2. If you need to replace the HD, just about any hard drive should work for your PIII (just not the new big ones). Sources would be your neighborhood computer repair shops or a neighbor/friend who's got a defective PC and would probably just throw them away rather than have them repaired. You can salvaged the parts and hopefully a working HD. Most also would already have Win98SE and transition from one system to another in 98 would not be that much of a hassle. You can then use your original Windows key.

3. Should you get one that has no OS, you can use an OEM Windows installer and still use you original CD key.

Hope that this be of some help/idea. Pls post back how things worked out or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards.

WinXP & Win2k cannot create FAT32 partitions larger than 32 GB.IF you want to use partitions larger than 32GB in WinXp then you will need to install a third party partition tool like Partition magic. Partition magic is probably the best coz i have formatted my 200GB HDD in 2 mins flat!

If you have spilled solder in this way you can use some solder wick to soak up the errant solder, solder wick, is a braided copper string designed to collect melted solder, simply apply the solder wick to the aggregated solder and melt, the wick will soak up the solder, you can then cut off the saturated section of wick and continue to soak up the spilled solder, then just refresh any solder points you have removed the solder from.

There are two options for you to get your drive stuffs back right now: 1). Do not format this RAW file system external hard drive temporarily and plunge it to your PC. And then, choose and apply RAW external hard drive data recovery software to scan this drive and find your preferred drive files back as many as possible. 2). Directly consult some professional data recovery services from some data recovery companies or agencies. In the future, remember to save copies of everything important on at least two devices in case of any similar data loss issues.

Can you please provide more detail on the program you are downloading, the model of drive, and model of computer? On the face of it, the program seems to be saying it is not compatible with the model of drive you have plugged in, or that the drive has been reformatted in a way that is not compatible. Does the drive show up in the File Explorer / Finder of the machine?after comment : ok, if you can drag and drop files onto it, then That means it is operational, and recognized by the system. The next question is why you can’t install the Seagate Desktop software. Where did you get the software from? Try going to Seagate Support and looking up your drive model, and doing a fresh download of the software they have for that model. Alternatively, there are other backup software packages available, Acronis, Aoemi, EaseUS, and others. You can find reliable downloads of utility software at downloads.com (CNET) or look for reviews from PcWorld or PCMagazine for their recommendations of the best paid and free backup software

Medalist 4310 (ST34310A) built in 1999 (20 years old ) why use any drive this old. why? it's useless. my wild guess, is this you have a PC and ustated PC has SATA only ports (modern) and this old old HDD is PATA drive, with ribbon cable wide. and you think it can run on modern PC. well they do sell cards (PCI-e) that fit and work. 4.31GB is the size , holds about 1 top movie . are you going to boot from this drive, if yes, very complex answer I will skip here. (ask maker of card , if it can) newegg.com has them all, any thing you can dream of , is there. if you look. https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIA4UB8ZU9127&Description=pci-e%2c%20pata%20IDE%20card&cm_re=pci-e%2c_pata_IDE_card-_-17Z-0007-00AF2-_-Product again, no PC stated, no OS stated. nor of booting is needed to the PATA relic drive. from 1999.

unfortunately it appears that the internals are shot if the funny noise is a clicking sound or squeal then the repair is a new hd unit as they are generally not repairable.

I usually figure 2 or 3 years for a hard drive life cycle. After that, I figure I'm on borrowed time. First try to check the disk for errors. Then try to delete the volume on the disc, then format - be sure to click "restore defaults".
