OKAY I found the Problem!! Bad Caps Compositors. I Proved this in 2 ways. First I took off the Back(always make sure the TV is UNPLUG) In the photo above I put my finger on the capacitors. I found some that where NOT FLAT ON TOP(You can kinda see in the photo too). I could feel a little nipple on top.(Some times you can see if their busted open but not in this case) so I felt them and the bottom right and top left area in red in the photo where not flat. I took my dryer(My wife really) and warmed them up for about 2 minuets each then another minuet rotating back then forth. I leaned the t.v. up to lean on the frame and plug it in. I continued warming the capacitors up and in about 2 Min the T.V. has stop blinking. Much better then the 20-30 min. So the hunt for the Capacitors is on. It will be some work to get the boards out. If everything is done delicately The Soldor job is easy for me. I am going to buy the 8 but replace 1 board at a time until the TV works and put the other on the side for next time or put them up on E-bay. I hope this helped Please like if this helped you.

I just open up mine to check all the compositors to see if their are any Bulging or to see if anything looks damage. I will pull the Power supply and start checking the compositors. and let you know. make sure the audio at the inputs is live

sounds like there is an issue with the power supply board in the tv. if the fans are not running then you may want to check those connections. also check the power supply board for any scorch marks.

The light turns red to signal the fact that the power source goes in protected mode - its safety system has detected a short on one of its outputs. So yes, it could be a problem with the power source itself - some of its filtering capacitors have aged and are now drawing a lot of current thru themselves. But it's much more likely that the problem is somewhere else - in your case the most probable fault is the Y-sus board, since the fault appears when it's time to start the plasma panel.

Hi, I am sorry but you don not seem to understand these "Standards" these are the result of the Video being Displayed, the TV, only knows it is whatever because the whatever "Tells" the TV, what "Format" to choose, either 1080p 1080i 720p 720i and 480p and 480i you see these are all "Formats, you TV doesn't decide what to display, and you cannot "Force" a non ****p or i, into any other, ****p or i, format. IF the image displayed on the TV is "Encoded" in that format, that is the Format that will be displayed. It is NOT a function of the TV set. Your problem with your colors to me sounds like what happens when you do NOT have the COMPONENT Video, cable wired up correctly, it must be Y, Pb/Cb, Pr/Cr, color to color, but MORE importantly, Y to Y, Pb to Pb, and Pr to Pr... if it is wired wrong you get that condition you have. Check you are wired correctly. The other COMPOSITE, Video out, is the Yellow, Video, plus Red & White, for Audio. NOTE the Red & White, are required when using COMPONENT Video too.
So the best result is obtained using 1080, but as said, it is the MEDIA played that determines that NOT the TV settings.

The model indicated (PFM42X1) is a model first made in 2004.

There are 15 boards listed as available for this model; the problem with these sets (PLASMA) is you need to check some voltages inside but eventually it comes down to replacing boards to see if they are or are not your problem.

Large black lines top to bottom is not a good sign--there are two sustain boards used in this model (one is about 350 and the other almost 600) but I would suspect what you may have is a bad PDP---plasma display panel--the entire front viewing area----

If the Panel is bad (likely in your case) the set is not worth repairing as the current cost for the part alone is over 2600 dollars and has a 3300 dollar core value--they are sold on an exchange basis.

I suspect the price is set so high for the usual reasons--to discourage anyone from even considering replacement of one of them.

Many of these sets had the panel fail--if it happened under warranty usually the set got "exchanged".

Black lines are always a bad sign--9 out o 10 times it ends up being the panel and not worth repairing.

Let me know if you want part numbers for the two sustain boards and or the panel--I have access and can provide that information.


Sorry to give what I think for you is bad news but it is what I think is wrong with your set.

this is a sony feature, they have a sensor on the front of the tv to measure ambient and adjust the tv brightness to the ambient light.

if you want to turn this off?

call sony or put some black tape over the sensor.

The only HD input on that monitor that is true HD is the 15 pin VGA input connector. It can be set in the TV menu to be used as an RGB input OR a color difference component input (Y, RY, BY). You will need a 15 pin connector that breaks out into 3 sperate cables; the ones I've seen break out into 3 BNC connectors and then you have to use dapators to convert them to standard RCA pulgs for connection to most consumer devices.

Check the settings in the menu and make sure you have the input properly set to RGB and not color difference settings (Y, RY, BY).

Bad news any lines like that mean the communication between the pixels and drivers is broken.
the glue has come loose.
Most will say it cannot be fixed
but there are tricks. it requires the panel to be taken apart.
Only a real tech can fix it.
Warranty time.

It sounds like a bad panel, which is not what you want to hear. Replacing the panel on a Plasma TV usually costs more than just replacing the TV. However a bad panel causes vertical lines exactly as you describe.
