This type of model does not have an eject button as the deck is designed so that when the head is retracted as in stop mode you simply pick up the door and pick the tape out of the well. This is pretty much the same in all the lower end Porta Studio models.

I'm not familiar with the Tascam DP-01 but many multi-track recorders don't commit effects to the track until the mixdown phase. The thinking being that you cannot eliminate a "bad choice" effect once it's down to tape (old school term) and so they allow adding the audio tweaks at the final stages of recording. Here they hope you can appreciate the entire mix and then decide what sweetners to add.

Hi Julian,There is a lot that can go wrong with these miniature helical scan systems. When I had units like that I packed them off to Russ at New Jersey Factory Service and they were restored. I am not sure about parts like drums at this point but Russ is your best chance to get it working again. He has corrected CDRW and DAT as well as just about anything Tascam makes and he even fixed some Sony units too. I know him as the counterpart to the Chicago Factory Service facility when it was open. It is hard to guess what is causing this but for all of the gain to be reduced like that either the deck has seen some really high input signal in the past that blew out some amplifiers or that there is a power supply component that has taken the input electronics down.I suspect that you will need to have a Technician look at it. Some players are programmed to read store bought cd's only.

You have not mentioned the model. Hope you have checked the belt and the motor that drives teh main capstain and the reel drives. If this does not work then replace and proceed. Also the pinch roller could be defective and not holding pressure to the spindle. Check the roller for hardening of the rubbers. replace if this is faulty. I hope with the set loaded with a tape you can find which drive is not spinning to take up. This should be able to confirm you with the right section. Hope this helps. Good day

You should be able to find a manual for it, many free online sources. Yes you can use it for r-t-r playback to transfer to CD's. One in good condition will typically go for $300-$400.

Many different things could sause a problem, belts, mode switch, capacitors in capstan or head motor drive circuit. Hard to say what exactly is wrong with the machine without looking at it.

I would take some contact electric contact cleaner, I think radio shack carries this. unplug the unit saturate it with this cleaner and keep pushing it in while spraying around the button. then let it set for a while to dry out. this stuff evaporates pretty quickly.

Very likely the over-write head does no longer function properly. Try again with a MD that already has recordings on it, try to record another track to it. If the entire disc seem blank after TOC was written, the OW head is bad. At this point the unit effectively becomes a player only....
