If the laptop is running Windows 98, then you will have to find a CD for this on eBay, cuz the company is way out of business
Higher than Win 98 will not require a CD

Windows Update from last year killed this player. The company is out of
the mp3 business, so there is no way to fix this issue. You could try
reformatting the player:
Ensure the Digital Audio Player is ON.
Use the supplied USB cable to connect between Digital Audio Player
and PC.
Double click My Computer icon on the desktop. You can find a
"Removable Disk" is added to your computer.
Right click on the Removable Disk then select Format.
Select FAT

There is a tiny pinhole next to the usb port - try resetting the device - if it still fails, you are out of luck - I think it has more to do with having Windows Media Player 11 on your computer than SP2. The computer wants to treat it as an MTP device, and this older player cannot do that. The company has long been out of the business.

This player does not recognize the new WMA DRM-encryption system - converting the file to mp3 format or using DRM removal software is the only way around this problem

Best Buy, Radio Shack, Circuit City - it's best to bring the player with you to make sure you are getting a compatible type- only need a USB 1.1 cable

According to all the reviews, forums etc. I could find, it is a standard USB 1.1 4-pin type A male to type B male cable.
Here is one example but there should be a hundred different versions of the same at any computer store for very little cash;

If this is not the right cable, then if you could post back with a photo of the connector socket on the player from close up and a couple of different angles we can hopefully identify which it needs.
No one is going to design a special cable for an MP3 player of this value, it would be a pointless expense unless they were going to continue selling the cable exclusively, which they are not doing.
There are however quite a lot of "standard" USB cable designs which are all different and not very standard.
Let me know if you have tried this cable type with no success, and with a photo or two so that I can identify the right one if that is the case.
Verge have vanished from the face of the earth, so don't waste your time trying to contact them. I had no luck finding anyone else who admits to having picked up Verge's torch either, so we have to hope that the people involved are enjoying their Caribbean hideaways.
Hope this helps :)
