This printer originally came with ScanSoft®, PaperPort®, and OmniPage® OCR software for Windows® and Presto!® PageManager® software for Macintosh® environments.You'll need to check these software packages to see if they will save the scanned image as a pdf file.

Not sure if your answer is correct, As I said Windows update thought it was downloading the correct driver and it didn't work correctly. I don;t want to say your link isn't helpfull, But I followed another suggestion and installed the Windows Vista Suite for the Brother MFC-5840CN all in one.and it not only fixed the problem it also installed all the multifunction drivers and software.So I am good for now. Thank you for responding to my delema. In case someone else needs it, Here it is.

If there printer is not able to print on card stock then check the recommend
card stock paper thickness, if the printer works with normal paper but not card stock then there is problem in the card stock and by using this paper may also damage the rollers on the printer and make the printer useless ...

Inkjet printers need to be used frequently to prevent inkdrying out in the print head nozzles.
If the print head cleaning maintenance routine does not clear the blockages,then print head needs replacing, but it may be expensive.
It may be more cost effective to buy a later model and better printer thanreplace the print head.

If you are getting "Unable to clean" message from your Brother printer kindly refer on the steps below to address the concern:

1. Turn off the machine.

2. Turn the machine ON while you are pressing the MENU button. wait until leds flash. This time you're on maintenance mode.

3. Press 80.

4. Then, press MONO START button until you see "purge:xxxx".

5. Afterwards reset the purge counter by pressing 2783. Purge:0000 will appear.

6. Press STOP button.

7. Finally, exit the maintenance mode by pressing 99.

You can now go ahead and use the printer once again. The prompt should be gone after doing these steps.

You need to clear the ink waste counter and clear the purge counter. Please see procedure below:

- pull out the AC plug
- put back the AC plug while holding down the "menu" button and keep holding it (15 sec)
- now you are entering the MAINTENANCE mode and "error 46" pops up in the display
- select 8 by using the arrow buttons ,push OK and select 0 and push OK
- 00:00 OK (the display is showing this message)
- now push the START button 25 times until you see PURGE: xxxxx
- Press 2783
- the purge counter indicates now: purge: 00000
- switch off the printer ,switch it on

You cannot use the full driver and software package now. BUT:
Printing is possible, scanning and FAX is not possible at the moment. You download the Vista driver (x32 or x64) from the official Brother site and install it with the Printer Wizard in Windows 7.

Have you tried rocking the cartridges from front to back to evenly distrbute the toner? If you tip the printer to clear a papre jam, the toner in the cartridge will often clump and cause a false error message.

There is an uninstall utility on the brother site. Windows usually will not properly uninstall the brother drivers. Use the uninstall utility, reinstall the printer, and see if the Win 7 problem is gone.

The printer must be reseted:

• Press menu then*2864 within 2 seconds and press 80.
• if you fail to complete the correct key sequence within two seconds, press the Stop key to try again.
  
  
• Keep pressing black/mono start button until screen displays 'purge count'.
• Press 2783 to reset purge count.
• Press stop/exit key
• Press 99
• The printer should return to normal
