Manitowoc QY-0214A Self Contained Ice Machine - Answered Questions & Fixed issues
I am getting a message saying the Curtain Open and I can't get my ice machine to come on?
I didn't think their smaller units had a curtain, but it is referring to the plastic shield that hangs in front of the ice making grid or evaporator. This must be closed for the unit to run and there is a magnetic reed switch located on the bottom right hand corner of the curtain to prove that it is closed. Actually the magnet is in the curtain and the reed switch is snapped into the side of the grid. Make sure the curtain is in place and the magnet has not broken off. If that is in tact look to see if the reed switch is in tight. IF YOU DO NOT HAVE A CURTAIN... some units had a small plastic flapper at the bottom of the grid that was activated whenever ice dropped. Same system though with a magnet and reed switch. The magnets on some of these curtains and flappers were just surface mounted with some kind of adhesive and others have it captured inside of a plastic pocket made into the curtain. So if you don't see a magnet look for a spot where it used to be. If you want to prove this is the problem just get a magnet and hold it up to that spot for about 10 seconds and see if the unit cycles on. You will then have to order a new curtain or flapper or attach a magnet to the broken spot somehow.

It will not stay in harvest cycle long enough to
First it has to go through freeze cycle then harvest cycle to drop ice then back to freeze cycle. If you have never worked on ice machines before you should call a service company.

Manitowoc QY0214A starts up and in about 1 min. goes into heating cycle. What's my problem
The ice thickness probe is a plastic and metal piece hanging from the water distribution area at the top of the ice making plate. It is probably touching or really close to touching the plate. It should be about 1'4" - 5/16" from the plate. It is adjusted by turning the screw located on the top of the sensor facing out at you. turn it clockwise to thicken the ice. the ice should come off in one large piece linked together by a roughly 1/4" sheet across the front. You can get a 1/4" drill bit and lay it on the plate behind the metal tip of the sensing probe and use it as a feeler gauge. Turn the screw until the probe just makes contact with the bit. Remove the bit and try again.

Makes ice for 3 cycles then stops running. Can turn
check the cycle time for a batch of ice. should take around 15 minutes to freeze and then you will hear the harvest cycle kick in. If the harvest cycle takes 3 minutes or more that is your problem. You will need to get a hold of NICKEL SAFE ICE MACHINE CLEANER. DO NOT use CLR or any kind of cleaner other than NICKEL SAFE ICE MACHINE CLEANER. If the ice doesn't fall off of the plate in about 90 seconds either the plate is dirty or the nickel plating has come off. There is a failsafe shut down if the unit takes more than 60 minutes to freeze or more than 3 minutes to harvest 3 consecutive times. The cleaning instructions should be inside of one of the covers. If not it's available online.

Why is my Manitowoc SM50 ice not dropping?
Greetings,
when this occurs, please add some salt to the idea in order to stop the ice from sticking together as much. That's the temporary fix. For any other machine, I would think this was an oil issue. That's the parts that create the ice stop-up due to friction caused by a lack of oil. I'm guessing that every time you clean the machine, you decrease the friction between its parts due to the water/soap that you use, but then the oily soap residue gets used up, and the issue returns. Please test out my idea.
Thank you.

I have a manitowoc r-12 system 200 I can't get to make ice what can I do
First, this us a very old system and probably needs to be replaced if it really is an R12 system. The unit is probably at least 40 years or more old since they stopped producing R12 about 1970's. If your manitowac ice machine is usable still, it probably has lost its charge and will need to be refilled with a suitable refrigerant. I actually still have a jug of R12, but I generally charge systems with the only substitute still available R420 if you can find someone who still sells it. I saw that both refrigerant were being phased out and purchased a couple of jugs and only have a little left. My suggestion if you want this ice machine in operation again take it to an ice machine repairman and have him repair it. Good luck.
