does it get better when it warms up if not it might cost more to fix then to buy a new one

Possible burnt out back light, check for an image with a torch shined through the screen from behind.

Sometimes in the settings you have to turn it on.

Those blinks [flashes] are fault indication (Error Codes). From the number of blinks occur at one time switch ON, you can get an idea about the faulty circuit section inside it. This will make repair easy. These are called blinking codes. Make sure about the exact number of blinking of the standby/power LED, by switching On & OFF the set, for at least two times. Could be dust on the laser lens that reads the discs. Or one of the two small electrical motors in the assembly. Usually the former and the best option is to clean the lens with a cotton swab soaked with rubbing alcohol. But I don't suggest doing it unless you have tools and experience opening up these products and if the item is still under warranty. DO NOT USE those so-called cleaner discs with the little brushes on them. They slowly cause small scratches on the lens over time and will scatter the light beam.
