This will happen if the IR sensor are sensing an obstruction while the door is closing OR if the IR sensors are defective. As a first option, check to see if any object is stuck to the door (possibly low down) that is triggering the IR sensor.

If your garage door is up, and you break the beam (by walking through it, for example), you will get the "SENSOR WIRING INTERMITTENT CONNECTION ERROR CODE 1-4 SEE USER MANUAL". This is normal. Both of my Liftmaster 8550 openers do this. It's misleading, but this is what I've found to cause this error.
Sounds like you have a chain drive garage door opener and you hear a humming sound when you push the wall console. The motor is running but the chain does not move. You need to replace the gear & sprocket assembly.
If you have a 315MHZ LiftMaster Garage door opener do the following:
Follow the purple wire (Antenna) up and you will see a square purple button.
Press and hold the square purple button for ten seconds until the amber led goes out.
Press and release the purple button one time (The amber led will come on solid).
Press and hold the button on the garage door opener remote control for two seconds (The light bulb on the garage door opener will blink and you will hear a click sound the amber led will go off).
to program the wireless keypad do the following:
Press and release the purple button one time (The amber led will come on solid).
Enter a four digit code into the keypad then press and hold the enter button for two seconds (The light bulb on the garage door opener will blink and you will hear a click sound the amber led will go off).
It sounds like a problem with the infrared safety beams, either they are not working, are misaligned (someone might have kicked/bumped into one), or I even had one that didn't work because there was too many cobwebs/dust covering one of the lenses.

Look at the corners of the doors that hold the aluminium frame together and if it is a modular door, tighten them up. If it is a solid door, adjustment can be made by shimming behind the bottom hinge with a piece of cardboard. This will move the bottom out and up.

Check the opening limit dial on the garage door opener unit. You can locate the dial that controls the opening limit on the opener unit and use a flat head screwdriver to turn the dial counter clockwise until the door stops about an inch and a half away from the stop bolt. If the above step does not work, check the limit switches on the garage door opener. Most garage door openers have limit switches that control how far the door opens and closes. Improperly adjusting these switches can cause the door to stop halfway. Consult your garage door opener's manual to learn how to adjust the limit switches. Are they vertical lifting sash windows? They have hidden counter-weights in the frame. Very often the string will break so you are lifting the full weight of the frame and the glass.
