I HAVE A "GOLDSTAR VCR"
I should have a look at the Goldstar website. It might come under LG by the way. Makers often put free PDF's of user manuals there.

Gold Star VCR hooked up to a Shaw 700 Digital
Sending the signal through the Shaw box should not in anyway affect it. The only problem that might occur is if you tried to record an HD transmission on a VCR not built to do so. Even then the only problem you would have would be a picture that would not be a normal size.
If you are having issues then either the Shaw box or the Sharp TV's connections are introducing some type of distortion. The best way to figure out which one is to take each one in turn out of the equation. As soon as the picture problem is reproduced you will know which is the problem.

Does my dvd player play dvd-r
It all depends on the manufacturer. Some newer units may play both "-" "=" or " - + ". There are 3 diff types negative, positive and both. My advice go ahead and try it.

I was recently given a gold star vhs-8mm vcr #
Most of the
goldstars that are 8mm need there remote to change to the inputs, However the trick with the channel up /down only works
ona small percentage of these units. This unit however will need its remote to operate its inputs. Also since this is not a standard VHS those inputs are
ment for camera's to record to tape not dvd as a pass through to tv. You might want to try getting yourself a rca pass through from
radioshack if you need to have those inputs. The cost of this device is around $25 bucks. Also if you need a remote for this VCR 8MM you can find them at
www.remotes.com. Otherwise there is not other viable was to get this on the inputs you want as its done on a remote.

Eats tape
What used to happen with these is.... the pinch roller used to get a build up on them, running an head cleaner through usually fixes the issues.
Trouble is I do not know if you can still buy head cleaners anymore, if all else fails you could open the unit and clean the pinch roller with some surgical spirit and wait for half hour to dry then try again.

What is you recommended dvd
Disc Laser cleaners do not work effectively.
It is recommended to use long handled cotton swabs and 100% isopropyl alcohol to clean the laser lense yourself - or have it professionally cleaned for $25-$30
You will spend $19 on a "cleaner" - to find it does not work properly.

Eats tapes
The VCR has a mechanical problem, and something is not moving the tape properly. Usually the takeup reel doesn't turn and tape piles up inside, or the tape isn't pulled back in properly before the cassette ejects. This may be due to parts wearing (especially if it's an older machine which uses rubber belts and wheels), gears that have gotten out of alignment, or electronic part failure. Without knowing the specific model and what mechanism is used, I can't give any specific parts to check or change. You can try a Google search for your model and may find the information already online. In any case, with the low price of VCR/DVD combination machines today (I don't know if a plain old VCR is even available anywhere now; haven't seen any at retailers!), you'll very likely spend more on repairing this unit than it's worth. It would probably be better if you used this as an excuse to get a new one.
