the black part sitting and secured to the filter body is referred to as the dial valve. there are many different types so if you are replacing it, be sure to replace it with the same type

Check to make sure you are not running any sand or dirt through your system. If its a plastic impeller, switch to a brass one.

make sure the pump has been primed, all the valves are open and in the correct position, no obstruction in the skimmer.
if the pump is working but water still not circulating, the impeller may be clogged with debris. you will need to split the pump and use a shop vac to remove the crud in impeller fins.

they are only plastic. if it sheared nicely, you can use crazy glue to fasten a ***** head to it and remove. if that doesnt work, use a tiny drill bit and an easy out.

there are no bleed valves on hayward pumps. there are freeze plugs. one is at the front of the pump at the bottom and there is another located on the side where impeller is at bottom

sand in your pool is a sign that you may have damage inside your sand filter. it is not uncommon for laterals to break during winter months. also, as the sand wears, it becomes smaller and may pass through.
remember that the filter sand is white. if you have sand in the pool that doesnt look like filter sand, you may have a problem with a broken line back to pool. keep an eye on your water level as you will lose water with this scenario

if you maintain your water balance, you should have no problems. improperly balanced water can prematurely disintegrate the O rings causing water to enter the 'dry' end of pump and that is a bad thing. I have a salt pool and have used the same pump for almost 10yrs

heat pumps do not heat as fast or effectively as a direct heat system such as propane or ng. they are only effective when the outside air is very warm otherwise they will actually cool the pool water.

pool pumps have a start capacitor, not a solenoid. if you plan to change this yourself, BE CAREFUL. there is enough electricity to give a horrible shock. also, make sure to replace it with the exact same capacitor (written on the capacitor). most businesses that sell them will usually test the suspected faulty unit at no charge

That means the computer is not talking to the sensors in the unit. Check all the connections, cables etc. Could be a bad board.

HS represents a problem with the temperature being too high. (maximum return water temp exceeded). this can be caused by a restriction in the plumbing system. i have that problem when i start my pool after a cold night. the water temperature rises too fast and the heater protects itself by flashing that code and turning off. reset the power to unit and it should work ok. if not, you may have to dig deeper as to why this code is being generated

HF is a flame sense failure. make sure the off\on switch is in the on position (on gas valve in heater) if you are using an automation system, you should see BO when the pool is running and heat is not called for. if this is the case, you need to take the heater off of remote control and try to manually call for heat using the buttons on the heater. if it fires, that would make me think that there is a compatability issue between the new board on heater and old board on automation.

could be pressure switch. that is the most common failure. otherwise, ensure gas pressure to unit, make sure gas valve switch is on (inside unit)
