States input lock, and asks

On a Mitsubishi remote control when it asks for the password you would simutainiously press the "9" and "QV" buttons until it unocks, then you would change the password. I am not sure this will work on a universal remote. I hope this helps anyway : )

It has a wavy line

All projection TV sets have two very common problems. One is convergence ( 3D/Warped video or dead set) the other is CRT fluid ( Dull Video). Here are more details and solutions for both.

Common Problem #1) Convergence has gone out

Projection TV sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the video to look normal. When its out of alignment the video will look 3D, wavy, distorted, etc. In some cases the TV will also not show any video. Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the TV menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired.

This is a very common failure on these projection sets and a fairly simple DIY fix. All projection sets including Samsung, RCA, Sony, Philip Magnavox, Panasonic, Pioneer, Akai, GE, JVC, Toshiba, and others at some point will have the same problem.

Common Symptoms include....

  • Screen looks 3D
  • Colors don't line up
  • One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
  • Screen is bowed or warped.
  • TV shuts off after powering on. Power light will blink. TV may also make a chirping noise.
Here are some pics of convergence problems.

Common Problem #2) CRT Fluid is Cloudy

Projection TV tubes have a liquid coolant that is used to keep them from overheating. After many years the coolant in the blue and green tubes will become cloudy and cause the screen to look dull, red/orange, etc. You may even see halos around images.

Check a capacitor in the signal board. The location is C2V29 [printed on the TV board] which should be a 16 volt 22Mfd capacitor. This little guy can certainly cause you TV to Flicker. You will also need to inspect all the solder grounds and be sure there are no cracked rings on any and all ICs. These ICs will be mounted on heatsinks. The pins are located underneath the TV board. I have repaired many of these TVs! Thanks for asking and give me some hands of support!

I am about to buy

No, if the screen is scratched it would have to be replaced---most are well over 100 in cost---if not too bad this should be a bargaining point to use---set not worth as much with scratched screen.

Out clear screen is protective only and anti glare as well.

Do not try to sand or buff it out--It will just make it look worse.

If this told you something you did not know, rate this solution as very helpful as I do this here for free.

Basically i have an older rear projection model

Many different mitsubishi's have problems with voltage regulators going out and causing wavy diagonal lines that scroll the picture from top to bottom or vice versa. Without a model number it's difficult to clarify.
