How to fix my craftsman riding mower, whcih dies after engaging blade
make sure blades not jammed. with mower off, try turning blades by hand.
it could either be a safety switch in the seat or for the reverse paddle.
make sure its not in reverse when you attempt to engage blades.
you should be able to bypass both switches with a jumper wire for testing purposes. if it works with jumper, replace the switch(s).
I own a Craftsman YT
Check the fluid level , check the the engine pulley for wear, Check idler arm spring tension,
Disassemble the transmission and inspect the pump center section and swash plates for wear....Look for tiny scratches on the bearing surfaces, if it is worn then replace parts as needed.
These hydro transmissions comes with grease in the gear box that stops working after a few years. You need to drill a hole in the top of the transmission and push about 1/3 quart of gear oil in. Then seal the hole. You can use metal tape. If the shift lever F-N-R is out of adjustment the tractor will go in and out of gear as you drive. Once it is adjusted you should stay in gear and it will run smoothly. It will leak the gear oil out various unsealed spots until it find the level below these spots. Also re check the belt alignment. If its over stretched or got loose then it can cause such problems.

Yt 3000 42" will not move forward or backward
Your drive belt might be off or broken (upper one) not the belt that controls the blades. There's a rod at the rear of the mower that also controls the trans-axle, if it's pulled out, the transmission is disengaged. To purge air out of the system, you pull the rod out, keep it in the out position with a pin and move the motion lever to go forward and return it to neutral several times, then do the same thing to the reverse direction. Then release the rod and return it to the very most inner position. GOOD LUCK, hope it's not a bad transaxle.

oftentimes the things will not start after sitting idle all winter as last year's gasoline has turned into a lacquer which has blocked the flow of fuel through the small passages in the carburetor. there is at least one product, called Stabil, which you dump into the gas tank which precludes this. So maybe a carb rebuild and clean out is in order; and if it then works OK you should make a point to put some of that stuff in your tank at the end of the season. Works well for RVs also.
My YTS 3000 will run but the blades won't engage.
Find where the cable is connected to the deck. Have someone move the lever and watch the end. Does it look rusted or bent?Unclip the cable at the deck. Then try the cable. If it moves freely there is something rusted, bent or broke on the engage pulley mechanism on the top of the deck.
Cranks only runs with full choke at idle
Sounds like main jet is blocked or the float seat is jammed or stuck this can happen for two main reasons1)leaving fuel for extended periods eg winter break 2) water in fuel Exploded diagram of carbie will help. Normally you would remove fuel bowl from bottom of carbie this is either clipped or screw in center of bowl . the gasket can hold bowl in position a gentle tap gets it off. the jet is normally screwed in to the same piece of casting as the screw for the bowl and is removed by a slot head screwdriver Note when sticking screwdriver up hole make sure it is small enough so it does not damage thread inside casting remove jet and clean with a fine wire or a jet cleaner.( they can be bought from a camping supply store ) then screw back in.The float is held in by a loose pin, when the bowl is off the pin can be removed, the float will fall off and so will the seat so be careful. the seat is small and is loosely attached to the float but will not stay connected to it.clean the seat and reassemble. Best to be done by removing carbie and placing on clean bench.Only some times can it be done in position. PS this is the same for most small engine. If you turn fuel off and run engine dry as apposed to turning off the ignition for long breaks this problem will tend not to happen
