The next time it shuts down (I presume the green power light goes off) do the self check this model has, on front of set press and hold both the menu and input buttons for at least five seconds and release both.

Power light will blink a 2 digit error code like : 1 blink, 2 blink and repeat it several times.

1,2 is no error detected but there are other codes.

Let me know what you find.

Hi, this is a very common problem with this set, what is happening is that there is a "Fault" so severe that if the unit was left powered on, there may be an fire, and explosion or both, as some component(s) are faulty and the PSU, is "Sensing" this and it shuts down the set, for safety reasons. The reason it was intermittent before is usually the component is failing sue to heat stress, and once it cooled down, the set would work again, however NOW this component(s) has faulted completely, and thus the fault is what we call "Hard ON" subsequently the PSU will NOT allow operation for the reasons discussed before.
If you wish to DIY, please find your service and repair manual below. Inside the manual you will find all the necessary troubleshooting steps to try to isolate and effect a repair, however i must warn you that this set is particularly hard to service, and it is my professional advice that you have the matter attended to by a professional.
I advise contacting a local or head office of Mitsubishi and ask for a referral to an authorised service center, here you should ask for a "Quote" before allowing any repairs to be undertaken.

Below is a training manual this is what I use to train the engineers to troubleshoot and repair and understand how it all works .. this will help you understand whats going on.

Hello, asnowman here.
I had to reply to this post, as the other would not let me.

Your question:
Comment posted on Oct 26, 2009 Thank you for your help, do you know what board this is on? signal, main, or power? Your televsion is the 73411, and I think that your convergence IC's are on the center board, (called the power board, even though it doesn't have the flyback on it), if they are not they are on the signal board. You can't miss them they are attached to a very large aluminum heat sink and the IC's are very large as well. I hope that this answers your questions. If you need further assistance please comment to this post and I will try to help you further.
Thanks for using FixYa

If the screen is black it is broken, that is why you got it for nothing. You saved the person the disposal fee. https://www.fixya.com/support/r29790007-repairing_own_television It is a DLP projection television, a veritable antique of old technology that has projection bulbs that need changing once a year. I would suggest that your bulb has probably failed. They are $30 to $52 each! https://www.google.com/search?q=Mitsubishi+1080+medalion+hd+manual .. ..

Antique technology! :>) It maybe that the guard around the fan is catching the fan blade. The only thing you can do is strip it down. It maybe something vibrating because it is loose and needs tightenening. Or you could just buy an 86" Ultra HD Flat screen :>D

Those blinks [flashes] are fault indication (Error Codes). From the number of blinks occur at one time switch ON, you can get an idea about the faulty circuit section inside it. This will make repair easy. These are called blinking codes. Make sure about the exact number of blinking of the standby/power LED, by switching On & OFF the set, for at least two times. Count it carefully. If you wish to get some details, check the site linked here. It has details about blinking codes, and fault locating procedure, to many popular brand TVs and other devices. http://electronicshelponline.blogspot.com/ https://homenol.blogspot.com/ https://elektrotricks.blogspot.com/

You have to enter its service menu to reset the lamp time. 1. Enter the Option Menu <MENU><2-4-7-0> 2. V43C & V43 Chassis select "2. Reset All Settings" and <ENTER>. Then confirm "YES" <ENTER>.. V43+ & V43++ Chassis select "Initialize" and <ENTER>. If you wish to get some details; check the site linked here. Pull up older posts or search the site by type in the brand name of your set, at its search box at the right column.. It will be best to replace the inverter board as card basis. http://electronicshelponline.blogspot.com/ https://elektrotricks.blogspot.com/
