If you go on the Website for either the TV Manufacturer or the Universal Remote Manufacturer, you should be able to find the codes that will "marry" your remote to your TV.
The process is something "like":

The remote website or manual that came with it will have the exact procedure.
The key to the whole thing is the code (make sure you have the exact code and TV Model.

Most stores will only give you 30 days to return something. You obviosly have either a bad plasma panel or a scan board. Either way you should have a manufacturers warranty. Contact the store for that info.

I have posted this solution for a few of the othe Sampo problems. This sounds similar. I had the same problem [sounds the same]. It was an assembly issue. the
circuit board
in the middle twards the bottom was wedged in but not flat. the bend eventually caused the same type symptons. I removed the board, applied presure over a couple days, heated the board with

and finally got the board to flatten somewhat. Also had to file one edge of the board to get it to set flat in its slot. Has worked since [over 3 years]. I do not recommend doing this unless you are prepared to throw it out, since this is very unorthodxed.

I think this TV had a quality issue. I had the same problem [sounds the same anyway]. It was an assembly issue. the

How do I know which board is broken
Dont be intimidated. it could be nothing more than a bad capacitor. these are easy to change. capacitors are the round little barrel looking things sticking out from the control boards. when they are bad they look fat and bulged. remove the board replace any bad components and reconect. I know it sounds simple but it just might do the trick.
Powers up but no picture
hook up a vcr and put in a tape and make sure there is a signal on the yellow video out jack.
use that as a signal to put a video signal into the 42 inch t.v.

Removing back stand supports
First I am not to sure about the brand you got there, But if it is not wall supportable you do not need to reove anything but by a wall mount that will hold the bottom in place and yes there are wall mounts for this tpye of arrangment see not all flat panels go on walls thus hence you cannot remove the stand easy. Try finding a wall mount the has a L shape to it, it will hold the bottom of the tv and it comes with a little strap to hold it back into securement. Please do not try to remove the stand I would suggest a diffrent wall mount- Rulds2008 TV expert for 20 years
