How long have you left battery on charger? It will take about 3 1/2 hrs to fully charge. t is probably not a good idea to leave the battery in the charger for long periods of time though, so once it is fully charged put it back in the drill. IT most likely is not 40 volts! It can be 20 or less. Depends on the battery configuration. There can be 2 twenty volt batteries in series and the charger charges them in a split configuration.

I have never tried this so all I can say is try it.

Just a thought, lithium batteries wont charge in Ryobi's old chargers. I upgraded my batteries but not the charger until I found this out.

check charger operation if ok , junk the batteries
