Stihl Concrete Cutoff Chop Saw Clutch Ts400 Ts 400 - Page 2 Questions & Answers
Hi,
My Stihl TS400 with 14"
Racing on a 2 cycle engine is usually a sign of a lean condition. It could be caused by a few different things including a bad crank seal or a torn intake manifold as some are made out of rubber. I would remove the cutter arm then pull the muffler to inspect the cylinder and piston. If they are scored it will be a costly repair.
Not getting spark when starting
[email protected] HI GRYDERT your problem could be your on, off switch. This might sound funny, but switch the on off switch real fast several times, then see if you havee fire. If not check your spark plug. If you have a n
ew one try it. If that don't work check the connection at the plug to be sure it is makiong contact with the plug. If all this does't work you will have to go inside to the coil. They don't usually go ba d but it could. But first check to be sure it isn't grounded at the small wire from the switch. Good Luck.
Ts400 runs a while the
Does it run normally until it has warmed up? Check for a spark immediately after it cuts out. This fault can be
caused when the coil has deteriorated and heat from the engine causes
the coil to fail.
With the TS400, the other major common failure is the main bearings leading to crankcase seal failure which will cause the machine to run lean and cut out. This can easily be check for by taking the pull cord and side covers off and checking for play by trying to move the flywheel/clutch up and down. If there is any up and down movement relative to the casing the bearings have gone.
TS 350 I have spark to the on/off switch, but no
The Short Circuit wires need to be looked at. Take off the cover over the flywheel. The two thin wires coming off of the coil need to be checked to see if there is a spot that has rubbed off and if there is a bare wire grounding out against the housing of the Cut Off Saw. May also check the coil wire going to the spark plug. This can also develop a spot that can ground out on the housing.
Does the TS400 need engine oil apart from 2 stroke
Hello. No, the oil mix is designed to do all that is necessary. Stihl 50:1 two stroke engine oil or equivalent is recommended for proper operation, cheap oil does not have the additives needed too keep rings free and inhibit carbon build-up. Also do not use BIA or TCW rated oils, or any others with duel purpose ratings.
Thank you

It sure sounds like a bearing gone bad or one or 2 of the cap screws at the blade end have come lose or the cap screw closest to user end is stripped.
TS400 ran good now it won't run without the choke
almost guaranteed that the check valves have stuck in the carb. the high speed check valve wont open so it cant get enough fuel. stihl has recently dropped the cost of the carburetors. i would replace before attempting to rebuild it. try arcolawn.com for parts
Wiring diagram for a stihl
There is no diagram. it is a simple system the coil for the plug has a kill wire that runs up to the thumb switch.
page 31 of the service manual shows the connectors.
Make sure the wires are not rubbed through.

Can you get a compression tester to check the compression? With the throttle wide open, the choke OFF, and the decompression valve (if so equipped) NOT engage, pull the engine over 3-5 times or until the gauge quits rising. You would like to see 90psi or more and if it is at 60 or less then it is most likely a scored piston and cylinder or bad rings. If the compression is good you need to check for spark. If it has good spark then it will most likely be fuel related. Often a complete tear down and rebuild of the carb is what is required.
