Sounds like the LED that lights up the display has burnt out. An easy fix, if you're not afraid to take the front panel apart and resolder a new one.

Check that a button isn't jammed. Do all the buttons press normally? maybe the remote needs a really good cleaning to remove the crud from the buttons.

It may have a reset button on the rear panel.

Have you enabled the component output on the dvd player and/or switched the output to "component out"? This type of connection doesn't have automatic recognition like scart.

Are you trying to record TV signal onto a DVD, or are you playing back? What make & model is your TV and DVD player/recorder?

There are two reasons for this. Firstly, the commercial channels are deliberately boosting the volume during commercial breaks to grab your attention. Secondly, the commercials use compressed audio (narrow dynamic range). This often comes across much louder than program material, which is using a wider dynamic range on which you would have based your volume setting. It is noticeable that the BBC are also sending out wide variations in volume at present - Yes it is VERY annoying. Some sort of ALC (automatic level control) is required but this would need to be switchable. Hope this helps.

I expect there is either a power supply issue or one of the amplifiers has failed causing over current to turn it off as a protection to the power supply.
