Hold 'fm/am' and 'input mode' and press power button. Then cycle through menus using 'program' button until you come to the selection that says "preset inhibit". Then press 'preset/tuning' button to change it to "preset reservd". Then press power button to turn it off. When you turn it back on, it should be back to factory settings.

Where and how do I hook my iPod to my htr 5440

Anything that has a headphone output can be adapted to feed an RCA cable pair for standard stereo to any audio device with a standard RCA input (except PHONO). Get a cable like the one described here:

http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.aspc_id=102&cp_id=10218&cs_id=1021804&p_id=665&seq=1&format=2

and connect it into any available analog input EXCEPT "Phono". Turn the PC's volume control for the headphone volume up. Of course, if you have a sound card with the usual green front speaker outputs that would work, too.

WHEN I TURN ON THE

Generally speaking, an amp protects itself from heat, shorts and overloads by refusing to turn on or stay on.

Overloads can be from excessive periods of high output and shorts would be wiring issues or a speaker blowing up.

You should be able to feel if it's hot. WHY is it overheating? Make sure it has sufficient ventilation on all sides and that vent holes are not blocked by dust balls. Ensure the fan (if equipped) is running as designed (some only operate on demand). Clean dust and debris from it.

If the amp comes back on after cooling, you're lucky. They only have so many self-protection cycles in their lives so continuously resetting or cycling their power without addressing the cause can do more harm than good.

If it protects immediately on a cool power up you should disconnect the speaker connections and try it 'naked'. If it comes up then diagnose which lead(s) are shorted. If it does not come up the problem is internal and should be left to an experienced hands-on tech.

Check sp wires?

Your problem most likly is not because of dust. Its a bad connection in the amp section or the protection circuit, or the speakers them self have a problem. There could also be a componet problem. Unless you know how to troubleshoot solid state electronics, you should take the unit in to be serviced. It would most likly cost more then its worth to repair. A unit this old is u replaced at this point. Good Luck

No sound from left fronts (A+B) in TV mode.

Just check the rca cables. Try wiggling the cables as well. If they are the plastic rca cables, they do to wear out quick.
If it is not the cables, than it is a shorted resistor in the channel sound output

Microphone for my YAMAHA HTR-5440

Let me make this clear to you that your Yamaha does not support Microphone but the trick is you can still do it. All you need is a stereo jack to a RCA connector cable.Check this out http://www.mediacollege.com/audio/connection/jack-stereo-rca-2.html It is easily available in the market. The stereo jack will fit into your microphone and the RCA to your Amplifier/Reciever. Plug the RCA into CD/Tape input but not in the Phono n do your thing. Let me know if this works, coz I'm really curious.

Can a turntable be hooked up to this receiver?

The Aux function is not meant for that purpose. The turntables/Record Players being way too old,now a days the amplifiers do not come with PHONO function that was specially used for playing Records/For turntables. Check if u have a phono function in your amplifier and if not then buy another amplifier with Phono function coz you need a ground wire [that comes out from the turn table] also to be attached to the amplifier and then only you can get a proper sound.

After powerning up my Yamaha HTR5540, it shuts

Hi,
There are only a couple possibilities. One the impedance selector on the rear panel is not fully set to either left or right position. In this case double check make sure that it is either to the left or right fully. Also it is possible that the protection circuitry has been activated, make sure all speaker wire connections on this unit and on all speakers are secure and that the wire for each connection does not touch anything other than its respective connection. The only other possibility is it was exposed to extreme electrical shock or circuits inside the unit have become defective. If none of these solutions work you will have to decide whether you want to repair the unit by sending it in or finding someone near you.

At this link you can either locate a service center nearest you or decide if you want to have yamaha repair but most likely someone near you would be the best bet and easiest way to get an estimate. If you need further assistance please let me know. Also please take a moment to accept and rate my solution accordingly.
Thank you,
Lee
