Jeff I am having the same problem. Have you found a fix for this yet? your post is right on but for some reason we are the only two withthis problem and my local jd dealers have never seen this. , Brent

It probably the starter relay, or ignition switch. What does it do when you try to start?

Be sure gas and air filters are clean and in good shape, maybe replace spark plug,too

Check the crankcase oil level. If low this can cause engine to tighten up and or seize up. Check gas tank for obstructions. It could also be your col shorting out. Oh and make sure that wet grass is not plugging up the shoot. Hope this helps, please post solved on fixya.com. So I get credit for a solved problem if it does.
