You want to set the clock after charging the device. Takes a short time. Set the time by pressing TIME and then HOUR/MIN for the current time. Now you can set the timer. Press the "ON" and set the time you want the device to turn on. Press the OFF button and set the time to the time you want the device to turn off. Put the switch on the top to the TIMER position and lug into the wall socket and then the device into the timer. Should be good to go.

1) You posted next to a photo that looks like Westinghouse28424/ Utilitec0144506/ Stanley 38425

2) When you say side-by-side, this timer is 4" wide, it will not fit side by side with another 4" wide timer. The total width would be 8" and no receptacle is that wide.

3) However, two of these timers will plug into ordinary electrical receptacle if one timer is plugged-in above the other timer.
So if side-by-side means 2 timers plugged into same receptacle, one over the top of the other, then, yes they will fit.

4) Stanley 58424 is a NCC timer and looks identical to other timers listed here.

Batteries for most plug-in timers are internal rechargeable batteries.
They are not replaceable and cannot be accessed.

To charge the battery: plug timer into receptacle for an hour.
Afterward, unplug timer to set timer program
Next, plug lamp into timer, and then plug timer into wall.
Be sure that lamp is turned ON.

If battery does not charge, then display doesn't show. That means timer is busted.
About 6-8 of new timers are defective from the start.
If battery won't charge, then return timer for another one.
Most of these timers work for a season or two, and then you buy another.
