Have you checked to see if the flywheel keyway is broken off or shifted? Have you set the magneto correctly, also does your engine use points. If not you should change it out to a newer electronic one, not expensive at all.

Engines let out smoke during start up many times, if the smoke is white it's a fuel problem. If is black possibly some of burn off but nothing to worry about. But if it's a blue color you are burning oil. Have it checked, but if your oil level is ok, an check it every couple of weeks, I would not worry unless you are losing oil.

If the post is melted, it means you have a dead short to ground. Was the cable touching the metal body or something metal? That's the only way it can happen the cable insulation was not there or rubbed off or something similar. Check the cables all around an look for bare wire, or some how the post connected to ground by jumping around.

Looking down on the f/r switch , the bottom contact is A then moving clockwise you get B, C , and D.
So C (top) would connect to A2 of the motor and also to A2 of the controller if there is an A2, Some controllers do not have an A2.
B would go to S1(F1) of the motor.
A would connect to B+ of the controller.
D would connect to S2 (F2) of the motor.

Check the throttle cable on the carb to see if it is returning to off position. There also may be a stop switch in the floorboard that grounds the engine when the pedal is in the up position.
