if you can hear the motor working but the paper won't pull in and shred then you broke a tooth on the plastic gear. This happens when you try to shred too much at one time. It happened to me but I couldn't find a plastic gear or the company to replace the gear. I liked the machine so I made my own tooth with DEVCON home plastic welder. With a little ingenuity and some tools you could try to fix it. Or like someone said buy a new shredder

Dear Edward, Most of the shredders have a micro switch that senses if the paper has been introduced to the shredding slot, or not These micro switches are activated by a little arm/leveler that touches the paper and activates de contact inside the shredder housing. While disconnected from the power, try to check if the switch is working properly. Check if you can hear a "click noise" while moving it back and forth by using a paper clip (or a toothpick). When this sensor arm is broken, the device will not operate since it does not detect the presence of a paper sheet to be shredded (and the power to hte motor is shut off). If this does not solve your investigation process, please make sure your power cord is fine. Otherwise, it would be an internal electric problem in the device (obviously!!!) One additional possibility (since I have no further details from you) is that the device is on and you can hear the motor running but the paper is not being pulled by the blades - in this case gears that move the shredder blades are most probably broken (that has happened to my shredder - and I had to dump it). FELLOWES SHREDDER In case of a paper jam , which may occur if the shredder is pushed beyond its specified capabilities, press the control switch to the off [O] position and empty the basket if full. Then: 1) Press and hold control switch in reverse [R] position and attempt to back paper out of shredder. 2) If shredder jams in reverse mode, press control switch to automatic [I] position and attempt to continue shredding operation. 3) If shredder jams again, alternate control switch slowly between reverse [R] and automatic [I] positions to attempt to move jammed paper completely through shredder. If you are unable to clear the jam using this method, turn off and unplug the shredder; remove the wastebasket from cabinet and carefully remove any paper extending below the cutting cylinders; empty the wastebasket; insert wastebasket and repeat jam clearing procedure.

I guess this question is past its sell-by date!

If it is run for more than 4-5 minutes the motor cuts out. You have to wait until it cools down - maybe 15 mins. Then run in reverse to clear

Have you tried running it in reverse? That's the usual solution If it is still jammed, you need to remove the cover and clean the cutters, and put a trace of light oil on. Check the manual for dismantling

Had similar problem. Make sure there is absolutely nothing stuck in there. Get the vacuum on it if you have to. It is simply not making proper contact.

It sounds like the cogs that drive the cutters are damaged or the spindle on which they run is bent. It requires stripping down the machine to see if this is so. It is very rare that any repair can be done. Looks like a new shredder...

The chances are that the dive cogs that operate the cutters are damaged or the spindle that supports them is bent. The unit would have to be stripped to see if this is so. If it is, it is usually unrepairable. New shredder needed...
