Remove covers, covers come off with plastic clips you push in in the back you will see small square holes in rear corners push in and lift cover, Keybord lifts up...board is in middle of the machine under a black cover and attaches to keyboard and has plugs to power supply on rear of machine.

The first thing to try is to lubricate the silver rail that the carriage rides on. A few drops of a light oil ( sewing machine oil ) may take care of the problem. Turn machine off, apply oil and move carriage by hand back and forth. Turn back on and see if this took care of it.

You didn't give a model but i'm guessing you are in a languagr modeCode "L" or "X" depending on the age.

If it dosen't lift at all wiggle the large black gear bakand forth a few times they do get tooth for tooth.DickyO

If theribbon dosen't lift at all see if the black gear on the R. side of the printer will move, if not w3iggle it and it should free up they get tooth for tooth with the motor gear. If it only lifts partually thereis an adjustment on the roll that works with the black gear. BE SURE TO CHECK THGAT BTHE PLATEN IS FULLY SEATED IN THE VSIDE FRAMES THEY DO GET LOOSE!DickyO

You are probably in the LANGUAGE mode Code "L" or "X" will get you out depending on the age of the typewriter.DickyO

Remove the ribbon. Almost directly under the L. side frame of the print head is the solenoid it's about an inch deep and an inch & 1/4 in diameter.

Code "L" or "X" depending on the age of your T/W will turn off the lang light and solve your problem.
