Data error cyclic redundancy

Hi There are several situations that might have caused a damaged to the driver. DATA ERROR CYCLIC REDUNDANCY might have been caused by a Virus attack. And in those cases, you will provably end up buying a new hard drive. How would I know that? Well, just check your memory and remember if you had been doing some Internet search/chat/downloading some stuff/visiting unknown sites, etc., prior to the damage. It ussually happens when you are using Chat programs, in which you may have received a file or a link to visit to (most likely the virus made an unrecoverable damage on the main section of the drive, the MBR - Master Boot Record)

My wd smartware has suddenly stopped working. it

An external storage-device has four major components:

* the USB cable

* the power-adapter

* the disk-drive inside the enclosure

* the USB-to-disk-drive adapter inside the enclosure.

One of these components has failed.

Try a different USB cable.

Try connecting to a different USB port on your computer.

Try connecting to a USB port on a different computer.

Take a "multi-meter" and measure both the voltage and amperage output from the AC adapter, and compare with the specifications on the label on the adapter.

Open the enclosure, and remove the disk-drive, and then connect it as a "slave" disk-drive in a desktop computer, to see if it works at all.

Purchase a new, compatible, disk-drive, and install it in the enclosure, to "revive" your external storage device.

Get the part-number and serial-number from the label on your disk-drive, and access the manufacturer's web-site, and use "check warranty status", to see if they will replace the device, at minimal cost to you.

Note that W.D. has a "Customer Loyalty" program -- you can buy a new W.D. device, through the W.D. web-site, at a significant discount.

There exist commercial "data recovery" services that can try to repair your device, just long-enough to rescue and copy your files. For example, see: https://services.seagate.com/index.aspx?lng=en-US for a "no data - no charge" guarantee.

I am getting the data error (cyclic redundancy

Hi,

A cyclic redundancy check, known as a CRC error, often occurs when you're attempting to transfer data to a hard drive. It's most commonly caused by an interruption in the recording process, but also can be a sign that you've got problems with your hard drive or optical drive.

Here are some steps fixed the issue:

  • Rule out problems with your computer Start by defragmenting your disk. Click the "Windows or Start" button in the lower-left corner of your computer screen and select "Control Panel." Click the "System and Security" icon. Choose "Administrative Tools," then "Defragment your hard drive." This will clear up clutter on your hard drive that could be causing the error

  • Use the CHKDSK program in Windows to see if there are other problems with your hard drive. Click the Windows or Start button and select My Computer or Computer. Right-click the drive with the CRC error. Choose Properties, then select the "Tools" tab. Click Check Now. Make sure the program will fix disk errors by checking the top square in the dialog box. Click Start.

  • Thanks for using Fixya.

    Western digital humming sound

I'm 99% sure the heads are seized to the platters on this. The buzzing, or humming sound you hear is the spindle motor trying to spin up, but it can't. This is also why the drive is not rotating. Definitely do not power this drive up any more if the data is important to you. If this is one of the smaller Passport style drives, it's pretty common for them to literally rip the read/write heads off as the drive tries to spin up. Professional data recovery is the only option in these cases.

    My wd pasport essential is

this drive is probably protected. you should try to unlock it first before you can access the drive.

when you plugin the drive you should have a temporary drive where unlock application resides.
run the application then type in your password.

if you don't have the password i guess there is no way to access the drive.

    I brought my WD External

This is not an easy one. I guess you have to consider the fact that the disk is just bust.
I used to deal with great volumes of different disks for computer and servers. And even though it doesn't happen too often, every now and then, one of these disks fails in the first few days.
I guess even with the best quality control, such things can happen.

You could always try to disk with another PC to rule out the possibility that the PC is the issue.
If the data is really important, then you could contact the vendor to have a look at it. If it is just a faulty circuit board, then that can be replaced easily. But beware. If you just bring it in for repairs and don't tell them that you need the data, the disk will most probably be wiped when they test it.

Then there is also the more expensive option to contact a data recovery company that uses different specialized methods that allow them to get data back in even the worst kind of situations.

I dropped my WD 500 GB passport style harddrive

Hard drives do not like being dropped, especially when it was in operation. This hard drive is faulty and it is not repairable.
There are data recovery companies that specializes in recovering data from faulty hard drives BUT it will cost you an arm and a leg for their services.
I suggest you Google search for these companies and get a quote before you proceed.
