Sunpak 5800d tripod quick release
Go to
this site and look at the plate mounted onto the tripod, do it that way, so the bubble level is on your side, and the second little push button opposite of you. The second button is there for larger cameras, many video cameras mostly, that have two holes on the bottom, to keep them from swiveling side to side on the plate. Also, makes it easy to ensure you put it on right in the dark, the extra button should go toward the lens. :o)
I lost my sunpak 5800D tripod manual. Is there
Not seen one available. You could try contacting sunpak and ask if they have a pdf version available.
Most will either send you the link or file or even a har copy of the manual if they have it available. They don;t show it in support but I've found a lot of manual that were not listed just by asking the support guys.
This should take you to the english site

I have a Sunpak 6000PG
This worked for me the first few times and I put a link to a video which explains the same thing.
"I had the same problem out of the box. Very frustrating. After some research, I found a you tube video showing how to tighten the head. The short version is that there is a fairly small hole that accepts an allen wrench (hex key) that can be loosened to allow you to turn the knurled ring just below it to loosen and tighten. The trick is to turn the knorled ring while pulling on the pistol grip. This loosens the mechanism so you can turn the ring. Worked like a champ. It is now solid as a rock."
However, my allen bolt is completely stripped now and there's no getting to it anymore. So...I did the following and I surprisingly, I haven't had to mess with it anymore. This sounds ugly and looks even uglier, I'll show you the snapshot, but it works well even with my dslr, with my battery grip, and with my 1000mm lens or my 70-300mm lens, in landscape and portrait modes.
Here's my final solution. I took a can of 3M Super 77 Multipurpose Adhesive Spray and gooked up the ball on which the tripod head rotates on and let it dry. I applied a second coat just to make sure I had enough in there to get a nice thick coat in there. (Remember, this was a last ditch effort and at this point I really had nothing to lose).
Today I am using it and surprisingly it pans smoother yet maintains the rigidity to be locked in any position. I can probably clean off the excess goo but I'll do that in my spare time!...yeah, right.
