First try this:

  2. Open the top and bring the ink cartridge holder to the middle.
  3. Raise the gray bar and remove the print head assembly with the cartridges in it.
  4. Lower the gray bar with the head missing and close the top with the head out.
  5. Restore the power, wait till The printer wakes up.
  6. It will tell you to install the cartridges, do so.

Computer won't recognize or add my printer. I had

Hello, I hope I can help you.

A 5200 error is indeed a print head issue. What happens is when you "pulled out the jam" and not let the printer eject it, this caused the print head to malfunction.

What you can try is unplugging the printer, open the lid MOVE the carriage to the far left then plug it back in.

This should help but if it does not you will need to have the head serviced about $32-60 bucks respectively.

If the printer is of age say 1 year 2 years my recommendations at this point is a replacement as it would not be worth the fix.

Internet solutions do help but are not always the answer as most are not professionals in the trade. Make sure you do the solutions at your own risk. Make sure you also look for the Asker rating on the experts profile. You should also look for there brand badges.

We hope this answer does help.

When i put paper in,

That generally indicates a hardware issue. You might try to reset the printer. Go to http://www.usa.canon.com/cusa/consumer/products/printers_multifunction/photo_all_in_one_inkjet_printers/pixma_mp490#BrochuresAndManuals for the manual

The printer is printing too

Have you had to clean this printer yet? After a good cleaning for lose ink around the cartridge, and other gear with a napkin picture quality may come back. Color is driven by the software settings so, recheck your settings, and you may want to use the auto photo fix features with this printer.

I have a paper jam

If there is a paper jam the sensor for paper in the wrong place is being triggered. Remove all traces of paper from the roller areas.

How do you change the ink cartridges

Lift the top part of the printer and then lift the black cover after the cartridges have moved to the centre of the printer. Then depress the clip that holds the desired cartridge in place and remove and replace.

What is the problem you are having?

My Pixma MP 490 printer

Hi

The error you are getting is due to paper jam inside the printer. Please check the paper output tray and rear tray for any paer bits. Also make sure if there are any foreign objects in the Rear Tray, be sure to turn off the machine, unplug it from the power supply, then remove the foreign object.

Remove any loose covers. With a small flashlight and pair of long tweezers, try peering into the printer and removing any debris that you find stuck inside. After this try inserting a new paper and check.
Please post back for any further assistance. If you are satisfied please do accept the solution. Daniel

After paper jam was cleared my printer wont feed

There is a small plastic gear that turns the roller, and when a paper jam occurs, oftentimes the gear strips it's teeth, and then the roller won't turn and feed the paper. I had this happen with an HP printer, and took it apart to see what the problem was. Upon finding the stripped gear, I tried to contact HP to get a replacement part and was told that they don't sell parts to anyone except HP authorized dealers, so I found a used printer and cannibalized the part, replacing it myself. Unfortunately, the broken gear problem happens a lot. About the only thing you can do is maybe load less paper, or load just the sheets you need for your print job, but even this doesn't guarantee that a jam won't occur. If you use labels a lot, they can leave glue residue on the rollers, causing a jam. You just have to keep them clean and hope for the best. In my opinion, the clean roller maintenance doesn't always work, and just a small amount of adhesive on the roller(s) can mess you up. They use a lot of plastic parts in printers these days, so they're very susceptible to breaking. Unfortunate, but that's the way it is. I guess that's their way of ensuring the printers won't last an awful long time, making people buy replacement printers sooner than they should have to. Don't think any one printer is necessarily better than the other, these days, so just try not to overload the paper and hope for the best. Sorry I don't have better news, and good luck.
