One "issue" with books purchased through the Sony ebookstore, is that they are unable to be transferred from the library onto your computer. If the books are already in your Sony software or Reader Library, the only way you'd be able to get them to your computer without using Sony software is to download them again from the source. Another option you may want to look into is Calibre - they have an unique ebook library platform that may help guide you through a way to do this, outside of Sony's software.

Sounds like the software of the gadget hang-up on you. Try to reset the gadget first. There are two methods of reset:
1. Soft reset: Press the Reset button using compass or needle and this will just do soft reset. If same thing will happen. proceed the Hard reset.
2. Hard reset: Please take note that all the data will be lost once you do this.
Hold Reset for 5-10 seconds. Flip power switch quickly 3 times. If this doesn't work. check the light next to the power switch. If it is flashing yellow, do the same steps. It might take up to two to four tries.

Try turning on the reader before connecting it to the computer, with the linrary not opened. Hopefully Reader Library will open automatically.
Also can try having the reader connected (and turned on) when you turn the computer on.

First, check whether this issue occurrs with all the books. If it happens with only one book, redownload the book again. If the issue happens with all the book, perform a soft reset. To soft reset, press the RESET button using a sharp-pointed object. That should reslve the issue. But, unfortunately if the issue still persists, perform a hard reset. But remember performing the hard reset will delete all the books.
Follow the steps listed on the page to perform the hard reset:

If the issue still persists, service of the Reader may be required. Please follow the below link to get it repaired:

mine was frozen and I could not turn it off - so I did a SOFT reset (just pressed the reset button with the end of a paperclip) with the reader ON (even though instructions say to turn off I didn't cause this was impossible to do), then slid the power button to reactivate - the yellow light came on, waited a few minutes -and it said opening book - and now all is fine

Hello,
The
Sony Pocket Reader allows you to read on the go, and easily fits into a
coat pocket or purse. It is a convenient way to carry books with you,
as it is very lightweight and small. Of course, you may encounter
glitches with any electronic equipment. If you are having an issue with
the Sony Reader,
there are a few troubleshooting steps you can take to
resolve it.
Instructions
-
Reset
the Sony Pocket Reader by pressing the "Reset" button on the back with
a small pin or paperclip. Turn the "Power" switch to turn on the
Reader. This will not affect the content that is stored on the device.
If you connect it to your computer before turning it on, the computer will not recognize it.
-
Give
the reader enough time to charge fully when necessary , if the battery life is short.
You may need to replace the battery if the problem persists. To do this
contact the nearest Sony Service Center. If it has been a long time
since you've charged the reader, it will take repeated charging to
charge it completely.
-
Wait
a few hours if the reader will not turn on. If any moisture or
condensation has gotten into it, it will likely work after you give it
time to dry out.
-
Check
that the device lock is not turned on, if you are having problems with
your computer recognizing the reader. Verify the "indicating connection
via USB" is displayed at the top of the reader's screen. If it is not,
disconnect the USB cable, wait a few minutes, and then reconnect it.
Good luck and thanks for using fixya.

as long as you have the reader plugged in, it will not work. Allow it to charge fully, then unplug it and turn it on. It is designed not to work while connected to a charger or computer.

Hello,
does it means the upper part of the screen still displays? If yes, then it means the screen for your Sony PRS 300 as gone bad or defective. In this case, I think you would be needing a screen replacement.
The problem now is getting a screen replacement. Online stores does not have a replacement screen for this unit. But I would suggest contact Sony via e-mail or phone, and as for the screen replacement of this Sony PRS 300. They might have it or direct you specifically to a dealer where you can get the screen.
Go to Sony's website, click on "Contact us" and you would find their phone number and or e-mail address there.
Good luck.

I have this same problem with my PRS-300. I can reset it by connecting it to AC power and resetting it, but it continually freezes up, rendering the unit useless. The Sony repair facility in Laredo has had the unit since 8/27 and has not been able to repair it.
