My Mad Dog external hard drive does not show up as
Connect it to a different computer, to see if the device is working at all.
If not, and if the Mad Dog is still under warranty, then exercise the warranty to get it repaired/replaced.
Otherwise, disassemble the casing, remove the disk-drive,
and connect the disk-drive as a "slave" disk-drive in a desktop computer, to see if the disk-drive is OK. This would imply that the USB-to-disk-drive interface inside the casing is the problem.

Sometimes the drives pull too much current to start. I understand that it worked in the other caes, but the electronics in this case may be pulling more.
Usually they come with a two-headed USB connector. Try putting the single end in the drive and use two USB ports on the other end. This doubles the current available to the drive.

I cannot get my Windows XP Dell Inspiron desktop
Go to Computer Management in Admin Tools of Control Panel and see if drive J is visible to this tool.
Also you will have to install its drivers if there are any before you can use one.

Will not read on my labtop
It is broken. Either replace it,
or purchase an external CD/DVD reader/writer, with a USB interface.

Where do i fine the model number
The model number will be on a tag on the driver. You can also see it under storage devices in menu once installed..

Does not rcognize a dndr
Click start control panel administrive tools,computer management,device manager scroll down cd-dvd rom drives you might see a yellow question mark ? right click you will have options to update driver,roll back driver,or select properties general troubleshoot, select driver click to reinstall drivers click update driver or uninstall then reinstall if this does not fix the problem it might be a registry problem if you cant see your disk drive in windows explorer
Close all open programs
Click on Start, Run, and type regedit and press Enter
Click on the plus signs (+) next to the following folders
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
SYSTEM
CurrentControlSet
Control
Class
{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
This folder is the DVD/CD-ROM Drive Class Description in the registry. Look for any of the following names in the right hand column.
Upper Filters
Lower Filters
Upper Filters.bak
Lower Filters.bak
If any of the above keys shown in step 4 are listed, right-click on them and choose DeleteAfter deleting the keys, close the registry editorReboot your computerOpen My Computer and check to see if your CD or DVD drives have returned. You may also want to open Device Manager and verify that the yellow exclamation and error code on the CD or DVD drive is gone. oryou might have to physically unplug the leads for this cd/dvd then plug them back this should activate the found new hardware wizard or
you might have to uninstall then restart your computer then reinstall your DVD/CD then reinstall the driver for this device
if your computer came with a motherboard disk the drivers could be on it

When I try to burn
make sure that the dvd burner is getting enough power test all leads that are attached to the dvd burner including electical extensions and make sure they have a secure connection or just replace them there might be bad/faulty or the drivers may have been corrupted or you might have a virus run your antivrus program you might have to physically unplug the leads for this cd/dvd burner then plug them back in this should activate the found new hardware wizard or you might have to uninstall then reinstall your DVD/CD or uninstall the driver then reinstall for this device Click start control panel administrive tools,computer management,device manager scroll down cd-dvd rom drives you might see a yellow question mark ? right click you will have options to update driver,roll back driver,or select properties general troubleshoot, select driver click to reinstall drivers click update driver or uninstall then reinstall if this does not fix the problem it might be a registry problem if you cant see your disk drive in windows explorer

I am trying to burn
the cd/dvd burner might not be getting enough power
make sure the leads that are attached to your cd/dvd drive have secure connections and are not bad/faulty or just replace them include electrical extension leads
or you might have bad batch of rewritable cd/dvd's
