After connecting my Dynex DX-E402

Typically wireless routers have one port labeled WAN and four additional standard network ports. The WAN port should be connected to your broadband device, typically a cable modem or DSL modem. You can configure your router with a direct connection to any of the standard ports connected to your computer. Your router must be configured to DHCP automatically with its connection to the modem through the WAN port. So to repeat, outside world to MODEM, then WAN port on router, the wired or wireless connection to your computer.

I'm trying to to configure

Hi.
The number you need to put in is 192.168.1.1
That almost always is the default gateway address to the router that you are connected to.
Once in a while, it will be slightly different...i.e. 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.2.1 or something similar to that.

If you type the ones I have listed into your browser, it should connect to your router.

Now, as far as passwords go, if you didn't write the correct one down, then you will have to reset the router.

To do that press and hold the reset button in for 15-20 seconds with the router powered on.

After that the router will be reset back to factory settings.

Then type in 192.168.1.1 in your browser, and it will ask for username and password.

In both those blocks type in the word ADMIN.

These are the factory user names and password combination set by the factory.

I hope this helps you out.

Good luck, and have a good day.

You can go here and download the quick setup guide and manual for your router http://www.dynexproducts.com/products/computers/DX-E402.html which will walk you through the setup.

The most common reason it won't connect is that you must have the router's IP number (the one listed as default IP in the manual) set as the GATEWAY address on your computer network settings and your xbox settings, otherwise they can not talk to the router.

What is the access number

Those number look like three fourths of the IP address. It's not the access number. The access number is created by the person who installed your router or it can also be the default number found on the label of the router - consult your router's user manual for a definitive answer.

I have a nettalk phone.

There has to be a small hole (usually at the back of the router). Inside this hole is a button. Use a paper clip to push this button for about 10 seconds fro the router to reset.

The default userrname and password for the DX-E402 router are "admin" for both fields, so as long as they have not been changed, you should be able to log in by going to 192.168.1.1 in your web browser and entering the username and password.

Trying to hook up router. What is the wan for and

The WAN port is the physical interface that provides input and output to and from the device that provides Wide Area Networking capability .. i.e. the modem that connects to your Internet Service Provider. The usual choices are a DSL modem, a cable modem or a Wired router or a wired switch.
The 4 other inputs are wired inputs and outputs for wired Local Area Network connections.
The WAN port normally connects to the Internet. It is not necessary to connect anything to the WAN port to have a network. But without one of the usual devices, you will not have access to the Internet.
The LAN ports connect to the network interface port on the individual computers that are part of the local network. One port connects to one computer.
A large system will have routers connected through the LAN ports to the WAN ports on sub routers and so forth.
