I think that the connectors from the backlight inverter board that go to the LCD panel's backlight are a bit loose which explains why it comes back on when tapped. I am positive that unplugging and replugging the inverter cables should do the trick. WOuld like to do it yourself? It requires you to open up the tv ofcourse.

Some will say a surge protector will save electronics. I can tell you they may not help at all. A power surge is extremely fast and can over ride the surge protector. If you think you can repair this TV, I would certainly remove the back cover and inspect. Occasionally the only problem for repair is to replace the main fuse. Remember, this happens rarely. Most cases after a surge the TV will need to be inspected by a TV tech. Almost anything, in a power surge will damage the TV. There is no certain area that will not be damaged, expect it any where. Reset the receiver by unplugging it for 10 seconds then plug it backin then re-address the remote again. If the remote is still not working at thispoint then it may be an interference issue. If you are having issues with aninfrared remote, find interference source (backlighting or power save mode onLCD TV's, fluorescent lighting in room, or direct sunlight), eliminate, orconvert remote to UHF. If you are having issues with an UHF remote, findinterference source (component (VCR, DVD Player, etc.) near DISH receiver),adjust UHF antenna, or distance UHF antenna from receiver using coaxcable/barrel connector. If the remote is still not working after all thesesteps we need to have your remote replaced.

Remove the cover on the back of the tv. Look for swollen or leaking capacitors. They kinda look like batteries. If they are bulging or leaking then that is your problem. You will have to de-solder the old ones off. Then solder the new capacitors onto the circuit board. Capacitors will cost about 20 dollars and installing them isn't that hard to do. It will fix your tv 99% of the time. So it is worth a try!

I'm assuming that you have checked that the sound is not muted. To confirm that a reset to factory settings is the next procedure: Menu - Setup - General - Factory settings. If you don't see/hear any modifications then it's a hardware defect, not something with the settings.
This happens when the tv thinks that the headphones are used. Simple test to confirm that: plug in a pair of speakers and see if you get the sound on them. If you get and the situation doesn't changes when you unplug them then this is a mechanical defect: the small switch inside the headphone jack is faulty and keeps signaling that the headphones are plugged in when they are not.
The only way to fix that is to replace the jack, which involves a very delicate soldering procedure , one that only a good repairman can do - you must call one.
